The Department of Theater and Dance presents "The End: An Apocalypse Anthology, A Collection of Short Plays" by Dan Dietz, Jennifer Haley, Allison Moore, A. Rey Pamatmat and Marco Ramirez. The play is directed by Wendy Renée Farmer.

The STEM Center is hosting the final session of Conversations @ STEM until next semester, so don't put it off if you've been meaning to stop by!

This week we'll be talking about how to define STEM, a topic more difficult than just spelling out an acronym. What topics are covered in the umbrella of STEM? Is it a separate topic from other subjects or something to be integrated into every aspect of education?

Jacob Sebok is an undergraduate student at SIUE working toward his degree in anthropology, with a minor in linguistics. As a research assistant to Dr. Kristine Hildebrandt, Sebok has been working with a team to develop a web-based archive and exhibit to house data collected as part of Hildebrandt's research project “RAPID: Narrating Disaster: Calibrating Causality and Responses to the 2015 Earthquakes in Nepal."

During his presentation, Sebok will cover topics including language endangerment and death, consequences of the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal, the process of constructing IRIS' newest website, and the role that archives run by small institutions can play in benefitting both academic and applied linguists in their work with endangered languages.

SIUE faculty and staff will have the option to sign up for payroll deduction for a Student Fitness Center membership.

Membership is in effect from the date that you sign up through December 1, 2018.

Life to Go Presents: Yoga Beginner Workshop, Dec. 5

The Office of Human Resources' Life To Go Series will feature “Yoga 101: Beginner Workshop,” presented by Campus Recreation:

Jennifer Payne, School of Business academic advisor and registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance, will guide attendees in learning basic yoga poses, connecting to your breath, and meditation techniques that will help manage stress and promote overall health.

This workshop is designed for beginners and those interested in incorporating mindfulness and meditation techniques into their daily lives.

Register, bring a mat, and join us as for a little yoga and meditation over the lunch hour. If you do not have a mat, some will be provided.

We recommend changing into comfortable clothes! This way, you can fully focus on the movement and mindfulness.

This event will be a great way to relieve stress from the holidays, stretch out sore muscles from wrapping presents, and take some time for yourself. We all deserve some relaxation!

The inaugural Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture will feature renowned environmental chemist Dr. Jorge Gardea-Torresdey who will talk on “From Gold Phytomining to the Fate of Nanoparticles in Terrestrial Plants: Synchrotron-based Studies.”

The Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public.

A special meeting is also planned for alumni of both chemistry and environmental sciences.

Lovejoy Library to Honor SIUE President Earl Lazerson, Dec. 12

SIUE Library and Information Services (LIS) invites campus and surrounding community members to a reception honoring Dr. Earl Lazerson’s donation of his expansive collection of mathematics books to SIUE and generous planned gift establishing the Lazerson Mathematical Symposium.

The President Earl Lazerson Collection includes more than 2,000 books, comprising mathematics- focused materials that Lazerson collected for more than 65 years.

“Many of these resources are rare or out of print,” said Lydia Jackson, interim dean of LIS. “The collection serves as a valuable academic resource to faculty, staff and students. The collection has been designated a special collection and is housed in University Archives and Special Collections in Lovejoy Library.”

During the reception, refreshments will be served, and Lazerson invites conversation and comradery. The University will present Lazerson with a commemorative photo and proclamation. SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook will offer remarks.
