Don't Miss Today's Panel Discussion on "The Boundaries of Art"

The SIUE Department of Opera and Musical Theater will present the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, "The Mikado" at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2 in Dunham Hall Theater.

One of the great classical operas from Gilbert and Sullivan, its original intention was to satirize aspects of British society, by using a fictionalized version of Japanese society as its setting. Due to both the setting and the tone of the original production, "The Mikado" has come under fire recently.

In an attempt to explore the complex issues regarding art on campus, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will host a panel discussion on “The Boundaries of Art.”
10 a.m.
Today
Morris University Center, Mississippi/ Illinois Room
Dr. Marc Schapman, director of “The Mikado,” will discuss the artistic decisions made in the course of the production.

There will be an opportunity for those who disagree with the decision to produce this opera on our campus to respond. In addition, there will be an opportunity for questions from any audience members concerning the issues discussed.

CAS Dean Greg Budzban will facilitate and host "The Boundaries of Art" event.
