| Lovejoy Library is once again participating in the ARTEAST Studio Tour on October 17th and 18th, 2009. SIUE's Lovejoy Library and the Department of Art & Design are just two of the more than 40 venues displaying the work of over 200 artists from the Metro East area. “Images and Inspirations from Char’s Garden East,” digital photos and artist’s books created by Charlotte Johnson, the Library's Director of User Services, will be on display through the end of October. Other exhibits currently on display in Lovejoy Library include the following: “Starting Small: Book Related Items from Our Personal Collections,” miniature and small books collected by Charlotte Johnson, miniature libraries collected by Bessie Richards, bookmarks collected by Lynn Fields, and pixi buchs collected by donors Leonard and Marlene Van Camp, as well as “Eighty Moods of Maya Angelou: Images from the Collection of Eugene B. | Once again, Lovejoy Library will be participating in Try-It! Illinois. This program, now in its 10th year, allows the staff and users of more than 5,000 Illinois libraries the opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources. Thanks to the partnership between the Illinois State Library and participating vendors, there is no charge for accessing the more than 450 databases being offered through November 30, 2009. | “Eighty Moods of Maya Angelou”, a photographic exhibit from Lovejoy Library’s Eugene B. Redmond Collection featuring the poet, educator, performer, and best-selling author Dr. Maya Angelou, will be on display in Lovejoy Library, Monday, September 21, 2009, and will run through the end of October. The exhibit is a testament to the rich and enduring friendship between Dr. Angelou and Dr. Redmond. The photographs showcase Dr. Angelou socializing with fellow artists, performing poetry, celebrating achievements with friends and family, and entertaining guests at her home in North Carolina. The vibrant versatility of facial expressions, body language and hand motions that Dr. Angelou assumes in the photographs confirms Redmond’s notion about the eighty-plus “moods of Maya.” Dr. Angelou was born on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, spending part of her childhood there before moving to Stamps, Arkansas, where she endured the effects of racial discrimination but began developing a deep awareness of the value and values of black folk culture and African American artistic thought. Over the years, Dr. Angelou increased her interest in the arts, taking up dance, acting, singing, and creative writing. In 1970, her bestselling autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was published. Over the last thirty years, Dr. Angelou has authored dozens of other celebrated books. Lovejoy Library’s Eugene B. Redmond Collection is one of the greatest post-civil rights collections of African American culture ever assembled; it contains hundreds of books, magazines, rare program booklets and flyers, audio recordings and historic posters. The Collection also contains more than 150,000 photographs of literary artists, musicians, entertainers, supporters of the arts and political activists, which Dr. Redmond has taken over the last four decades. Author, literary historian, and arts organizer, Dr. Redmond was named Poet Laureate of East St. Louis in 1976, the same year that Doubleday published his critical history, Drumvoices: The Mission of Afro-American Poetry. |
| On August 4, 2008, Lovejoy Library released an enhanced library catalog interface. This "next generation" search portal is designed to simplify and expand the search for library resources. Developed by Villanova University, it is being beta tested for the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois by SIUE and several other Illinois universities. Some new features include: Both the Lovejoy Library catalog and the I-Share (statewide) catalog will be available through the VuFind interface. Links from the Library’s homepage will route users to the new interface. Faculty who provide links to these catalogs in their courses will need to change them to the following URLs in order to accurately direct students. | Lovejoy Library has greatly expanded access to the IEEE full-text online resources that have been available through the IEEE Xplore portal. The enhanced subscription expands access in the following ways: Coverage from 1988 (with some from 1950) to 131 IEEE journals, transactions and magazines. Coverage from 1988 (with some from 1950) to 600+ conference proceedings. Access to 40 IET journals, transactions, magazines and conference proceedings. Access to the full-text of Spectrum Magazine & Proceedings of the IEEE. Access to 9,000 current and active IEEE standards. The IEEE Xplore search engine (along with the ACM's Guide to Computing Literature) is also useful for searching computer science content. | Lovejoy Library, as part of its "information literacy across the curriculum" program, is providing campuswide access to one of the most complete rubric construction tools available. The Rubricator is a software application from New Measure. With this tool, faculty can create rubrics and align them to information literacy and curriculum standards. Automatic scoring and report features allow users to view an individual students performance on each task or standard.
