HOW TO FIND BOOKS: THE ONLINE CATALOG
The Library Online Catalog is used to find books, DVDs and videorecordings about a particular person or subject. Some general subject headings for dance are:

Dance notation Dancing

There are also subject headings for types of dance:

Ballet Jazz dancing Square dancing

Headings that primarily cover biographies include:

Many headings have subdivisions that describe a book's contents in more detail. Some examples of these are:

It's generally best to check all the subdivisions under a heading so that useful materials aren't overlooked.

Some additional dance subject headings in our catalog are listed below. To find other headings, you can search in the Online Catalog using the browse subject command option. Of course, you can still look in the Library of Congress Subject Heading List (on a stand across from the Reference Desk). If a
heading is listed there in bold type or with a "sa" (see also) abbreviation preceding it, you may find it in the subject catalog.

Dancing in art (Literature, moving-pictures, television, etc.)

If you are looking for recordings or scores of dance music, many of the headings above apply. Others that are useful are:

Of course, you may also search for dance music and books using the names of authors and composers or titles of works in the author/title catalog.

To locate books beyond those in the statewide I-Share catalog, search WorldCat. This online catalog provides citations to books and other materials in nearly 40,000 libraries in 76 countries.

There are a number of useful resources in the Reference Collection and the Music Listening Room. Check materials in the GV 1585-1790 and ML-MT call number ranges. Of special note is the International Encyclopedia of Dance, vols. 1-6 (Ref. GV 1585 .I586 1998). Another useful index is the New York Times Index (Ref. AI 21.N45).
