Welcome to the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences

Students and faculty at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall with special events next week.  The group "Students and Professors Exploring All Cultures" will recreate the famous wall on the Stratton Quadrangle on Monday, November 9, 2009 exactly 20 years after the most prominent symbol of the Iron curtain fell.  SPEAC spokesperson Elisabeth Jones said the depiction will be 20 feet by 8 feet and will be made out of wood.  The wall will first be constructed off-site and then reassembled on the Quad.  Copying the original Wall, SIUE students will be invited to paint graffiti on the wall on the Quad.  The wall will be on display through Friday, November 13, 2009.  As part of the display, a special exhibit on German culture and heritage will be on display in the Goshen Lounge of Morris University Center on Monday and Tuesday, November 9 and 20.  More than 200 students from local high schools will visit the SIUE campus on November 9 to view the exhibits and listen to a presentation on the politics of the Berlin Wall by Professor Belinda Carstens-Wickham, chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature.  For more information, contact Elisabeth Jones at eliljone@siue.edu

Bringing Middle East to Midwest  Fulbright professor Reham Othman is bringing Arabic language and culture to SIUE this year through a new course in the Foreign Language and Literature Department.  Othman said she is teaching at SIUE as part of the Fulbright Scholar Program, an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.  Othman is from Cairo, Egypt.  Before being selected for the Fulbright program she worked as a teacher, film translator and at the center of Curriculum and Material Development.  She has also begun her master's degree in teaching methodology.  Demonstrating basic alphabet and language in Arabic, new professor Reham Othman instructs a beginner's Arabic class.  Of his new teacher, sophomore Jarad Magurany of Godfrey, Illinois says that his teacher is "taking her time to find the best methods that work" for the classroom.  Othman's beginning Arabic course, FLL 121-003, is open to all students, and according to History professor Steve Tamari SIUE is fortunate to have her..

Student Archeology

Archeology Field School The 2009 Archaeology Field School took place on the SIUE campus May 18-July 10.  Under the direction of Julie Holt, Chair of Anthropology, and GA Lori Belknap, eleven anthropology students surveyed and excavated a prehistoric site on campus.  Surface collection confirmed that the site, which was first recorded by archaeologists in the 1960s, was occupied at various times between the Mississippian and Archaic periods - from 800 years ago to 2500 years ago and older.  Excavations revealed storage and cooking pits dating to the Middle Woodland period, ca. 2000 years old, and also demonstrated the potential for deeply buried components dating to the end of the last Ice Age.
