PLAGIARISM SCHEDULE GRADING ATTENDANCE
Course objective: This is the second semester writing course designed to introduce you to formal academic writing. We will be using the theme of gothic fiction as a teaching tool to learn the various steps involved in writing an academic research paper. You will read various short stories and books (all available online) towards the goal of understanding research methods, narrowing and focusing on topics, taking notes, exploring library resources, Internet assessment, paraphrasing and documenting sources via MLA style.
Texts: 4 rentals; MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 5th Ed. (optional); several stories that are available online via the website litgothic.com.NOTE: You must read the English 101 and 102 Student Handbook. Pay particular attention to the sections on Grading standards and plagiarism. Breaches of specific guidelines could result in expulsion from the course. If you are caught plagiarizing, you will fail the class, not just the assignment. It is your responsibility to understand the handbook in its entirety.
Cell phones and pagers must be turned off before you enter class.
Assignments: Late assignments/papers will not be accepted. If an emergency arises, call me or email me at hurleys@ezl.com. Papers written in class will be hand-written in a regular classroom will be hand-written; in a computer classroom, they will be typed. All other assignments must be typed and double-spaced with a 10- or 12-point standard font such as Courier. Use one-inch margins and standard MLA format. Put your name, the date and the course section number in the upper left or right corner. Number each page.
Attendance: If you miss three classes, your grade will be adversely affected, and you could fail. Attendance at your scheduled conference is required. Missing one counts as an absence.Grading: 3 research papers = 600 points total
