Chris, you are
such a wonderful instructor!!! You always have such great comments that
lead me towards learning. Thank you! I'll answer your stuff here in blue.
X-Rays:Equipment slide show. Did you consider adding some interaction into
this show? Mini quiz? Guess what this is and what it is used for? or
something like that? No, I hadn't considered
that, but I think it's a great idea. I'll do that if I have the time.
Also, I find myself (and it may just be because I am a nerd) wanting to
know a little more about some of the equipment. What is the difference
between the bite stick and the XPC? Are they used differently? Some
dentists use one others use the other? Also what is the lead apron
protecting from? (I know, but 2nd and 3rd grades might not) I usually just tell them that it's just to protect
them. They usually accept that with no explanation. I don't want to freak
them out. Some kids get that way. Why do they use the panoramic
machine? Is this for everyone? I do like how you added the gloves and mask
protect from germs. That's all I needed to know about those!
As for "What is the ...looking for" looks great. The cavity hunt
adds interaction. Is there anyway you can guide the learner a little more
on what they are looking for? Might need a little more instruction here on
what to look for with cavities...not sure (or maybe it is just me that had
trouble!). OK, so I tried to add more
instruction on what to look for. I guess I failed. It's hard to explain
exactly what you are looking for, that's why I tried to do only large
cavities. It's easier to see.
The Cleaning: I agree, "Calculus is very hard"...I'll stick
w.Algebra ;-P bwahaha!
Should brushing and flossing get its own page? What was you thinking for
keeping it on the same page? This requires a lot of scrolling. I was
surprised as I kept scrolling to find more content.
Hyperlinks in brushing and flossing PowerPoint take me back to cleaning
page (new window), but it looks different. No videos, only a link to
"brushing and flossing." You must
have been looking at this as I was changing it. The brushing and flossing
page is by itself now...I thought the cleaning page was too long.
The slideshow on brushing and flossing creates good interaction for your
learners. Asks them to use the generative strategy recall to answer the
questions.
General Thoughts:
Overall: I love how you carry the thread of a visit to lead the learners
through the site. It seems so logical, but I don't think I would have come
up with this. Great job! I think it helps that
I do this 10 times a day...it was easy to come up with. :-)
Audio readings: I was taken to a new page for the audio. Had to click the
back button to go back to the page. These are probably what are eating your
server space(with PowerPoint and thumbnails of links as culprits too). Some
thoughts, are the audio tracks necessary? Is the content above the reading
level of your learners (not just certain words, but the site as a whole)? I
found this site http://juicystudio.com/services/readability.php which tests the readability of a website. It has your
homepage from 2nd-4th grade. Not sure how reliable this is though. Could
you tweak the text of the site without dumbing it down? field test with 2nd
graders or 2nd grade teachers? I'm working on
the audio...trying to link it so that you just have to press a play button.
My mom is reading the site right now for readability for this age
group...she taught K for 30 years, and had many of her readers at the 2nd
grade level by the time they left her! Hopefully I'll have this solved by
this weekend...no promises!
Also you might want to consider the thumbnails for links (videos,
PowerPoints, and brushing chart). They are also eating up server space.
Simple text could do the same thing with less server space taken up. I've solved the power point stuff as you can see on
my brushing and flossing page
http://www.siue.edu/~rschalk/Brushing_and_Flossing.html I used Tammie's
suggestion to use the Window's Live site to store the power point. This
took away the audio from the shows, but I added that they should read it
with their parents to add some learner/learner interaction...and to take me
off the hook of the audio. :-) This also took away the need to open another
application.
Last thought, in working through your documentation, did you contemplate
other generative strategies beyond recall? (and please forgive me if I
missed others in you site...hard to keep everything separate S-P ) It seems
that organization and integration might come into play...possibly in the brushing
section. Could you have the children develop their own plan for brushing
and flossing (organization). Integration is tougher, but it seems like
"why this is important" would come into play. I'll have to think on this. I think you may be right
about applying it to the brushing section, but I might be able to think of
some other places to apply it.
Thanks again for all of your help!
