Christy,
I'm going to write this as I read you post so I don't forget anything. The flow of a nicely written post may not be there, sorry! I love history so your project intrigues me.
1. What is a web quest?

2. You said you want to include pictures and statements. I think some video would be powerful, too. Although it would be in German, I think that the students could get the feeling of the day and how charismatic he was. Short clips would probably be best to retain interest since they wouldn't understand what he was saying.

3. You said in your concern section, "Another concern I have is that the site will just be a bunch of content. I don’t want a big long passage for students to read. I want something that gives them information but it is short and to the point."
We've read about Skinner and how he believed information should be given in small steps, some sort of evaluation, and immediate feedback. (Yes, this is my theme tonight!) I think that by creating small chunks then some thought provoking questions or some sort of game to test the knowledge would be an idea. Then they get a chance to use what they've read. It always seems that if information is applied right away, the person is better able to retain it. (I know that I always try to apply my dental stuff to situations so I'm more likely to be able to access it when the appropriate time comes.)

I really liked some of your ideas.  I think that using small steps would be a smart way to teach the students about this topic.  I liked the thought of using some videos and then I could provide thought provoking questions and then give the students feedback on what they wrote.  I could even introduce a blog where students can write their thoughts but it only be available for my class to view and write thoughts.  Thanks for the input because I was starting to worry how I was going to set up my design for this project and now I think I have a starting point.

A webquest is basically a website that someone has created about a certain topic.  It could honestly be about anything.  Then they put the students on a quest to find information on the web about the topic.  A lot of the time there are questions and links to pages the students can read to find the answer.  I'm not a huge fan of them because most of the sites that have the information are kind of dull and boring.  Some have way to big of words for my students.  I like the other style of website that takes students on a journey by using videos and primary sources to teach them about the topic.  It's more interesting to them anyway.

I like the idea of student blogs. This could really get some good emotions out there about how they feel when they watch the video, and since hindsight is 20/20 how they feel about what happened.

Since, sometimes students have a hard time sharing some of these emotions, you could also have a private journal that could only be read by you and them (maybe be available to their parents??) so that other children can't read them and make fun as sometimes can happen.

I was thinking I would do it the old fashion pencil and paper way too.  Then that way I am the only one who see their writing.  Besides, pencil and paper was at one point in time a new technology too! :-)
