Objective:  The goal of this course is to introduce students to the basics of the ancient Greek language (Attic Greek).

Requirements:    You will be required to master the grammar, vocabulary and other information in each assignment listed on the schedule.  Two unit tests and a final will be given.  You will also be required to complete two hours' study in the language lab each week. Quizzes (sometimes unannounced) will be plentiful.  To receive credit, your homework must be submitted at the beginning of class. You will be asked to make a xeroxed copy beforehand for use during class discussion.

Text:   Balme, Maurice and Gilbert Lawall. Athenaze, Book 1.  Oxford University Press, 2003 .

Grading:  Each unit test will be worth 25%, the final will be worth 25%, and 25% will be based on daily work, including homework, quizzes, and lab.

Attendance:  Attendance in class is important to mastering the language.  Absence will negatively affect a student's grade.

Schedule:

Students should master the material on the pages indicated for each day and complete written exercises specified by the time the class meets.   Mastery includes memorization of forms, understanding of grammar, and memorization of vocabulary.  There will be regular unannounced quizzes.
