Course Description: This course investigates the advanced principles and concepts of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and their responses to exercise.  Specifically, this course includes the recognization, identification, and interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECG).

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the heart and circulation.

  2. Display an understanding of the electrophysiology of the heart.

  3. Identify and discuss the physiology of the cardiovascular/circulatory system and its response to rest and exercise.

  4. Develop an understanding of the nervous system and its relationship to the cardiovascular system.

  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles and patterns of the electrocardiography.

  6. Identify cardiac rhythm disturbances associated with an electrocardiograph.

  7. Understand the American College of Sports Medicine’s guidelines for exercise testing and prescription.

Grading Policy:

90-100%   A     80-89%     B      70-79%     C       60-69%      D        0-59%      F

Each student will be evaluated on the following percentages from the midterm, comprehensive final, case study, and assignments:

60%-Midterm and Comprehensive Final Exam

20%-ECG

30%-Assignments

Assignments, Case Study, Readings, and Tests

  1. No make-ups of Midterm and/or Final Exam.

  2. You must be present IN CLASS to receive and assignment.  No assignments will be accepted from students not in class.

  3. All assignments are due IN CLASS on the date assigned; assignments received later the same day will be penalized 5 points and assignments received after the due date will be penalized 10 points per day.

The University defines plagiarism (Cheating) as academic misconduct.  Plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the course.  Copying work generated by others, including past students of this course, is cheating and will result in a failing grade for the course.

Attendance Policy:

  1. The general policy outlined by the University will be followed.  This policy states: “Upon registration, students accept the responsibility for attending classes and completing course work.  It is the responsibility of students to ascertain the policy of instructors with regard to absence from class, and to make arrangements satisfactory to instructors with regard to missed course work.”
     

  2. The instructor’s policy for this course includes:

Your presence is expected in class daily except for emergencies.  Students assume responsibility for any material missed in class.

Requests to be absent from class for official University business (athletics, field trips, etc.) shall be made prior to the anticipated absence.  Arrangements for missed work will be made at that time.
