Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the student to theoretical and practical concepts of exercise assessment, exercise interpretation and exercise prescription.

Prerequisite: KIN 315 and KIN 420

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of risk factors and an ability to evaluate the risk factors of clients.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to use the American College of Sports Medicine risk stratification for assessment and prescription.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the conceptual basis of muscular strength and muscular endurance.

  4. Assess and interpret muscular strength/endurance tests.

  5. Understand the physiology related to flexibility and stretching.

  6. Evaluate and interpret tests of flexibility.

  7. Administer and evaluate indirect and direct measures of maximal oxygen consumption utilizing a variety of tests.

  8. Design an exercise prescription for a perspective client.

  9. Design a Fitness Manual for a Fitness Center or a perspective client.

  10. Understand the American College of Sports Medicine metabolic equations.

Grading Policy:

        90-100%   A        80-89%     B           70-79%     C          60-69%     D          0-59%     F

Each student will be evaluated on the points from the midterm, final exam, exercise prescription, and assignments.

The grade will be based on the following percentages:

50%-Midterm and Final Exam

30%-Fitness Manuel

20%-Assignments  

Academic Dishonsty:

The University defines plagiarism (Cheating) as academic misconduct.  You are expected to behave in accordance with the Student Conduct and Student Grievances: Rights and Responsibilities Policies.  Examples of student misconduct include, but are not limited to: use of unauthorized materials during testing, receiving/providing answers from/for others during testing, claiming as your own the written work of others, and plagiarizing.  Plagiarism is the act of copying, paraphrasing, or otherwise using written or oral work of another without proper acknowledgment of the source or presenting oral or written material prepared by another as one’s own.  All academic misconduct will result in a failing grade for the course.

Tests, Case Study, and Assignments

  1. No make-ups of Midterm and/or Final Exam.
  2. Fitness Manual and Assignments are due IN CLASS on the date assigned.  Exercise Prescription and assignments received later the same day will be penalized 5 points and Exercise Prescription and Assignments received after the due date will be penalized 10 points per day.
  3. Participation in Valentine's Fitness Day is an assignment with a value of 50 points.  You must participate in Valentine's Fitness Day for two hours to receive the 50 points.

Attendance Policy:

1.   The general policy outlined by the University will be followed.  This policy states: “Upon registration, students accept the responsibility for attending classes and completing course work.  It is the responsibility of students to ascertain the policy of instructors with regard to absence from class, and to make arrangements satisfactory to instructors with regard to missed course work.”

2.   The instructor’s policy for this course includes:

Your presence is expected in class daily except for emergencies.  Students assume responsibility for any material missed in class.

Requests to be absent from class for official University business (athletics, field trips, etc.) shall be made prior to the anticipated absence.  Arrangements for missed work will be made at that time.
