URLs A URL is basically a file name.  It is the address for a web page or other files. A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) has a particular format for example:   http://siue.edu/~mthomec   The beginning part: http:// provides the protocol   The second part: siue.edu is the domain.   The final part: /~mthomec is the pointer to the specific file on that server.
