Instant Message
Instant messenger is great when you are just playing on the internet and someone else decides they want to communicate. That would be the same as if you were just relaxing and someone decided to call you by telephone and you answer.
However if you are already in a chat room talking to someone else it would be rude to allow yourself to be interrupted by the instant message. That would compare to setting at dinner with someone and answering your cell phone and having a non urgent conversation.
