OTHER KINDS OF GRADES

The letters below indicate that something other than a regular grade was earned.

A grade of W stands for WITHDRAWAL
. This means that you withdrew (or dropped) the class before a predetermined time in the semester. While a W will show up on your transcript, it does not compute in your GPA.

The grade of WP means WITHDRAWAL PASSING. This grade is given when the normal withdraw deadline has passed, but the extended withdrawal period is still in progress. A WP is assigned by your teacher based on your grade at the time of withdrawal, and does not compute in your GPA.

When you withdraw from a class after the normal withdraw deadline, the faculty member may choose to give either a WP (right above) or a WF. WF stands for WITHDRAWAL FAILING. A WF is the same as an F grade — meaning it will be on your transcript and will compute in your GPA.

Students are required to complete the right paperwork to drop a class. It is your responsibility to get all the required signatures and submit the withdrawal paperwork to the University’s Service Center. When you fail to do this — and just stop attending a class
— you are assigned a grade of UW, which stands for UNAUTHORIZED WITHDRAWAL. A UW is the same as an F grade — it counts in your GPA.

In rare cases, a student may be given an INCOMPLETE (or I) grade. This occurs when you have completed most of the work, but have a serious emergency that interferes with finishing the class. An incomplete grade is a temporary grade and does not compute in your GPA. However, if you don’t complete the work for the class, you will eventually be assigned an F.
