Description of course:

FR453 is a French literature course in which students undertake an in-depth study of the major writers, and literary genres they represent, of the nineteenth century to the present day. However, the major emphasis of the course will be on Romanticism. Representative selections from the works of authors will be read in French. In addition, students will read background information on the writers themselves and the development of the literary genres of poetry, theater and the novel. The language of instruction is French. Activities in class will consist mainly of discussions of the assigned readings, lectures by the instructor and short oral presentations by the students.

Student's responsibilities:

Class attendance and performance: Daily attendance and performance are of the utmost importance. Attendance is required. The student's absences will be reflected in his/her final grade for the course. There are no excused absences, make-up assignments or quizzes. Late work will not be accepted. Students are expected to carefully read the assigned literary selections and the accompanying background information. They will demonstrate their comprehension of the material by participating in class discussions and by their performance on a midterm and a  final examination to be given on the dates indicated on the course calendar. Any conflicts that arise concerning the dates of the midterm or final exam must be discussed with the instructor in advance. In addition to the midterm and the final examination the students will be given short written quizzes at regular intervals. Failure to take a quiz, test or the final exam at the appointed time will result in a grade of "E" for that test. Finally, each student will prepare a bibliography on the author of his/her choice and a paper (5-7 typed pages, double spaced) on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Each student will give  a short presentation of his/her paper at the end of the course.
