Columbia Eagles Defensive Scouting Report

Defensive Scheme

Columbia is a team that plays exclusively man to man defense.  They attempt to use their quickness and athletic ability to cause problems for the ball handler.  They also have big men who are physical and try to use their strength to their advantage when fighting for post position.

On the Ball Defense

Columbia plays pressure defense on perimeter ball handlers.  They take away the dribbler's space and make him uncomfortable.  If ball handlers are sloppy with the ball or dribble too high, Columbia's guards will try to steal the ball.  Because of this, it is important to keep your dribble low to the ground and your guard hand out.  If  you are trapped or double teamed on the perimeter, it is important to remember to use the pull back dribble in order to escpae the defense and give your teamates time to get open.  Stay patient and find an open teamate.

Columbia's perimeter defenders also do a good job of tipping passes thrown by the man that they are guarding.  Becuase of this, you must utilize pass fakes and not telegraph your passes.  This will lead to tipped passes and steals, which will result in easy baskets for the Eagles' offense.

Help Defense

Columbia does not play great help defense.  The help defenders are not in gaps like our pack line defense.  However, they do not deny passes to other perimeter players either.  They do a good job of sprinting to help when a perimeter defender gets beat off the dribble, and all players are willing to take a charge.  Because of this, it is likely that once you beat the initial line of defense off of the dribble and get it lane it is important to jump stop as to aviod getting a charge.  It will be difficult to skip the ball against this defense, you will need to penetrate the lane in order to pass the ball to a teamate on the other side of the court.

Post Defense

They three-quarter front all posts ups from the top side.  Their bigs are strong and physical, so they will try to push you out of position.  Stay low and hold the defender off with your off arm.  Because they playy three-quarters on the top side, we have some built in advantages.  The first is we can enter the ball to the post on the baseline side.  If our post player holds off their defender, they should be able to use a drop step for a lay up.  Another advantage that we can have is that if we drive the ball baseline from the perimeter, the post defense help will be out of position (at least momentarially).  This can lead to open pull up jumpers and lay ups by our guards from the wing position.

Guarding Off the Ball Screens

Columbia's perimeter defenders chase all off ball screens.  This includes pin downs, staggereds, double staggerds, side by side doubles, and zippers.  They also go over the top of flare screens.  The man guarding the screener jams the screener in order to let the man guarding the defender work.  Because of the way that they guard off the ball screens, it would benefit all movers to curl cut off of screens.  This will allow an easier pass from teamates that will lead to better scoring chances.

Guarding Ball Screens

As stated earlier, the Eagles' perimeter defenders pressure the ball.  Because of the way that they pressure the ball, it makes sense for them to go over the top of ball screens, which they do.  To allow the defender to go over the top, the man defending the screener will hedge the ball screen and making the ball handler widen out when using the screen.  This will enable our screener to be more open when rolling to the basket.  For this to happen, our screeners must set a solid screen and roll to the basket as soon as the ball handler clears the screen.  Hesitating to roll will give the defender time to recover and take away our advantage.
