Notation

Taking notation serves a player well and gives them the ability to recall move for move exactly how the game went. By seeing this, they can see where they went right along with where they went wrong in certain moves. It is highly similar to the notion of athletes watching film of their football or basketball games. In order to take notation, you get a pen and paper and write down every move you make along with every move your opponent makes. You write it down in the name of the specific square. Here is an example of how to do this in the midst of a game going on: BlackRookH5 X WhiteBishopA5. The placement of that “X” represents a capture taking place on behalf of the black army capturing a piece of the white army. For just regular moves, it would be represented like this: D1-G4. This represents the white queen moving from her original spot to another. You only need to mention the name of the piece when a “capture” or kill is taking place. Other than that, you can simply use the name of the square and retrace the mention from the beginning.

You will want to do this throughout the entire game with a regular sheet of paper, or you can use a more standard sheet with notation style lines.
