computer integrated manufacturing systems. The research was funded by the Chair of

INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE
1982 - 1984 Senior Plant Engineering Analyst, ROHR INDUSTRIES, INC., RIVERSIDE, CA
Responsible for conducting systems and productivity studies crucial to project engineering, facilities
and maintenance administration. Analyzed and systematized in-house functions for automated
control. Developed customized computer application programs for improved utilization of
personnel, equipment, materials, and facilities in the area of plant maintenance through such
functions as work order planning and scheduling, preventive and corrective maintenance program,
inventory control of equipment and spare parts, and purchase requisitions tracking.
Accomplishment: Implemented an installation of a computerized work order tracking and
corporate budgeting systems.
1981 - 1982 Industrial Engineer, ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL, DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA
Duties included originating facility resource planning to accomplish major office modernization,
creating office layout plans, evaluating and determining need for facilities and equipment
requirements and originating actions to satisfy long and immediate area requirements.
1980 - 1981 Engineer, BECHTEL POWER CORPORATION, NORWALK, CALIFORNIA
Duties included maintaining, updating and reviewing project documents and vendor prints for
compliance with codes, corporate standards and specifications, utilizing application of ASME codes
and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations to construction of nuclear power plants.
Monitored schedules to assure that program delivery requirements were met.
SUMMARIZED AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION
Knowledge-Based Expert Systems
Conducting research to explore the potential uses of artificial intelligence (AI) and knowledge-based expert
systems as non-numerical computing tools for engineering design, analysis, and control. Primary focus is
on the design and application of knowledge-based expert systems for fault diagnosis, real-time process
supervision and control in CIM systems.
Integrated Production Systems
Research focuses primarily on the integration of automated production functions notably: aggregate
production planning, inventory control, materials requirement planning, capacity planning, scheduling and
maintenance. The desired goal rests on how the various decision-making techniques are employed to achieve
efficient utilization of constrained resources.
Methods Design and Work Measurement
Involved in the productivity improvement aspect of methods design and the determination of standards for
performing specific tasks including wage incentive programs.
Engineering Costs and Production Economics
Engaged in the examination of economic analysis of potential system design alternatives and the
development of cost estimates whenever a new production/technology is contemplated.
Systems Simulation
Expertise in simulation modeling of large-scale systems involving the design and the development of
mathematical-logical model of a system and conducting experiments with this model on a digital computer.

Development of New Courses
- 1991: IE492 - Introduction to Knowledge Engineering
- Was developed and taught for the first time to seniors in Industrial Engineering as a technical
elective.
- 1992: IE492/CE492 - Knowledge-Based Systems
- The course "Introduction to Knowledge Engineering" was upgraded to accommodate the needs of
seniors and graduate students in Civil Engineering, and the course title was changed to "Knowledge-Based Systems".
- 1993: IE492/CE492/EE492 - Knowledge-Based Systems
- The needs of the graduate students in Electrical Engineering were accommodated by a slight
upgrade of the subject contents. All three classes meet together at the same time slot. The three
courses as a result of the conversion from quarters to semesters are numbered IE497, CE497 and
EE487 and are cross-listed in the catalog.
- 1994: CE597/EE587 - Intelligent Engineering Systems
- Development of an advanced level course in artificial neural networks for engineering graduate
students was undertaken and offered for the first time in Summer 1995.

KES (Knowledge Engineering Systems), KEE (Knowledge Engineering Environment), and CLIPS.
- General purpose simulation languages used include SLAM, SIMAN, and GPSS.
- Operating systems used include UNIX, VAX/VMS, and MS-DOS, Windows NT, Windows 95.
- Computers used include NeXTstation, SUN workstation, VAX 11/780, VAX 11/750, IBM-PC/compatibles and IBM mainframe.
