STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States.

As a result of their schooling students will be able to:

A.   Locate, describe and explain places, regions and features on the Earth.

17. A.3b Explain how to make and use geographic representations to provide and enhance spatial information including maps, graphs, charts, models, aerial photographs, satellite images.

Preparations:

          Contact mayor Officer and have him read and endorse the letter.

          Have a map prepared with the places listed above.

 

 

Methods:

1.     Divide students into groups of threes or groups of fives.

 

2.     Have each group with the material provided begin to put together a map showing the following places:

·        The E. St. Louis Center of Higher Education

·        Broadway

·        Collinsville Ave.

·        Highway 64

·        Highway 70

·        Belleville

·        St. Louis

·        State St.

·        Missouri Ave.

·        Fairview Heights

·        Cahokia

·        Alton

·        Collinsville

·        Your street and house

 

3.     After 30 minutes of interaction have each group to display their maps.

 

4.     Display a map with the correct positions of the above places.

5.     Let each group have time to compare the correct map with their map.

6.     Listen to their discussions.

7.     Read the Letter from the mayor.

8.     Discuss the charge that the mayor has given us.
