Tools For Creation

The Basics

A web server.
Knowledge of HTML.
A simple text program such as "Notepad".
An FTP (file transfer protocol) program.

There are many websites that allow the user to create their own Web page. One of the most popular is Geocities. All you need is an account with Yahoo, which is also free. Many of these sites also have page builders that can be utilized by users who are not familiar with HTML. Although they offer limited storage space, beginners will find it adequate. Most of these sites allow upgrades for a monthly fee.

http://geocities.yahoo.com/ You will need to have a Yahoo account in order to use this service. Basic yahoo accounts are free. You can get one by going to http://www.yahoo.com/ Click on the MAIL icon and then click SIGN UP NOW.

http://www.freewebsites.com/ This seems to be a good deal. You get: Free sub domain e.g.. yourname, 50mb of web space, Unlimited e-mail addresses (anything)@yourname.freewebsites.com, FTP access for uploading, 2mb file size limits, Hosting on secure high end Unix servers, Choice of advertising(free sites are free because of ads) Unlimited aliases for your site i.e. http://(anythingyoulike).yourname.freewebsites.com/ or http://anything.yourdomain.com/ for domains!

http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
http://angelfire.lycos.com/ Both of these sites are run by Lycos. Just like geocities you can build a free site with ads or you can choose a site that requires a monthly fee. They go from about $5.00 to $20.00 depending on the features you choose. The neat thing about these sites is that you can build a blog or a regular website. With a pay site you can have both. I was able to create a blog at Tripod and a regular site at Angelfire, all for free. Pretty cool!

http://teacherweb.com/This site gives teachers the opportunity to create a very basic Website. The good thing about Teacherweb is that it is the easiest website to set up that I have encountered. The downfall of Teacherweb is that the user has little control over the design of the site. You can choose pre-set color controls but that's it. If your are looking for an easy to create, easy to manage site this is for you. If you want a little more control over the design of your site, try one of the links above.

There are many HTML editors on the market. These will help the user design a page like the page builders mentioned above, however they also allow the user to manipulate the HTML.
