Principles of Web Page Design

Help the user save time!

  • Navigation
  • Make it simple for the user to get the information they want.
Use as few clicks as possible.
  • Function
  • Who is the audience?
Does the site contain relevant information?
  • Appearance
  • The site is visually appealing.
    Graphics serve a purpose.
  • Accuracy
  • All links on every site page have been tested.
All site elements have been checked for errors in spelling and grammar.
  • Speed
  • Each site page loads quickly.
All graphics load as quickly as possible.
  • Consistency
  • Each page level has consistent markings.

These are just a few examples of things you need to keep in mind when designing Webpages. Content is very important and I don't want to downplay it, however the way your your site looks will be the deciding factor to the person looking at it. It will determine if the person stays on your site or if they move along to another site without giving yours a second thought. "The first screen your visitor sees is the first impression they will have of your site."(Flanders & Willis,1996)
