Title: Professional Headshot of Man

Dr. Dennis Mares

Professor of Criminal Justice Studies

Profile

As a researcher I explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary topics, but all share my key interest: how do time and place shape crime patterns.

Aside from strict academic research I work closely with law enforcement agencies in evaluating best practices and have conducted evaluations of police technology, including gunshot location technology (i.e. ShotSpotter).  I am currently a research partner with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on a federally-funded project evaluating the efficacy of mobile surveillance units.

Recent publications have been published in Journal of Experimental Criminology, Environment and Behavior, Journal of Sports Economics, and Climatic Change.

I regularly teach Crime, Theory and Practice (CJ 273), Research Methods (CJ 302), Data Analysis (CJ 303) and Neighborhoods and Crime (CJ 450).
