Soul Café was founded in 1998 by Ed Starrett aka “Mr. Ed”, a premier guitarist and composer in the St. Louis area. Ed studied with such guitarists as Fareed Haque and Bobby Broom and has had opportunities to play with renowned R&B/funk drummer “Zoro” as well as keyboardist Jay Oliver (Dave Weckl Band). Soul Café has played at the Chesterfield Jazz Festival, Wine Dine Jazz Fest as the headliner for three years, The Wildey Theatre, The Webster Jazz and Blues Fest, St. Louis Art Fair, Clayton Art Fair, The Ozark Theatre, BB’s Jazz & Blues as well as numerous private gigs.
Over the years, Ed has developed the band’s sound in fusion jazz by composing and performing original compositions. Additionally, Soul Café performs the works of artists such as the Yellowjackets, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Lee Ritenour and Chuck Loeb.
In 2003 Soul Café was voted #1 by St. Louis Jazz Radio as best new artist. Recently the band made the top 88 by WSIE jazz radio 88.7. The new album “Step Aside” is a collaborative effort with the band members composing an all-original project produced by saxophonist Jason Swagler. The band recently signed with Autumn Hill Records which is the new record label for The Dave Weckl Band, Tom Kennedy, Jay Oliver, Gary Meek and local artist Scott Jones.
