Questions for staff and faculty candidates are like family heirlooms – each committee takes the questions from the most recent search, adds a few tweaks, and fires away. Rarely do committees start with the hiring criteria they have outlined in the job description and focus on finding information relative to those criteria. Questions are redundant, can provide advantages to some candidates, and create opportunities for pre-held preferences and biases. In this interactive session, we discuss principles for developing interview questions, share illustrative examples of flawed common questions, and suggest inclusive alternative questions.

3 TAKEAWAYS:
• Audience will be able to identify a process for developing diagnostic interview questions.
• Audience will gain awareness of how common interview questions can leave the door open for bias.
• Audience will walk away with specific examples of how to create a welcoming interview environment through interview questions.

Speakers:
• Camille Johnson. Professor of Management, Lucas College and Graduate School of Business, San Jose State University
• Moderator: Meredith G. Bruner. Greater Kentucky HERC Regional Director and HR Operations Manager at Centre College
