Join a select group of OER leaders from across Illinois for a focused strategy session on expanding Open Educational Resource (OER) publishing. This event brings together faculty, librarians, instructional designers, academic leaders, and publishing professionals to explore how Southern Illinois University Press can support collaborative OER publishing efforts across the state. The goal is to develop a feasible plan to utilize the publishing expertise of SIU Press to help institutions and faculty move beyond OER adoption and into authorship.

Through short presentations, roundtable discussions, and working sessions, participants will:

  • Discuss ways SIU Press could reduce barriers to authorship by acting as publisher and project manager to handle tasks such as copyediting; image selection, review, and permissions support; text design and typesetting; cover design; indexing; and more.
  • Explore other value adds of publishing OERs with a University Press such as peer review management, potential faculty editorial board approval, marketing, P.O.D. sales, and the imprimatur of a University Press publication.
  • Consider the implications on statewide OER capacity for publication when barriers are decreased and incentives are increased.
  • Develop a potential workflow for OER publishing in collaboration with SIU Press;
  • Conduct a needs assessment for submission procedures and begin to draft necessary guidelines, forms, cost calculators, and other materials.
