What is Green Dot?
Green Dot is a violence prevention program based on empowering bystanders. When people attend our trainings, they learn to recognize potentially harmful situations and how to safely intervene.
- A red dot is the choice to use words or actions to harm another person. A red dot is when someone’s dating partner calls them a name or shoves them, when a student is afraid to leave class because their stalker is waiting outside the building, the decision to have sex with someone without their consent. We don’t know how many red dots happen at SIUE, but we all agree there are too many red dots.
- A green dot is the single choice to use your words or actions to prevent someone from being harmed.
A green dot could be checking in with a friend who’s in a new relationship, calling SIUE Police Department when you hear your neighbors arguing, walking home with a friend, asking someone if they are okay, or recommending resources to someone in need.
When the green dots start to outnumber the red dots, everyone on our campus will know:
- SIUE faculty, staff and students don’t tolerate power-based personal violence, and
- We are all willing to do our part to intervene
Available Training Session Types:
Faculty/Staff Virtual Overview Sessions (1.5 hours): Designed for faculty and staff to learn about overcoming barriers to intervening, bystander intervention options, and how to proactively intervene.
Student Virtual Overview Sessions (1.5 hours): Designed for student leaders and influencers to better understand elements of culture change; recognize behaviors that may constitute sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, or stalking, or behaviors in the aftermath of violence; recognize barriers that may prevent them from intervening in incidences of power-based personal violence; develop intervention options given their unique barriers; and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage their peers in positive culture change.
All sessions are by request only. Please contact greendot@siue.edu to schedule a training session.
