Paul Simon Outstanding Teacher-Scholar:
George L. Engel, PhD

The SIUE Paul Simon Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award is presented to a faculty member in order to recognize the role of the interdependence between research and teaching. This highly competitive award confirms SIUE's belief that an individual must be a good scholar to be a good teacher. Winners of the Paul Simon award have demonstrated a significant contribution to their area of research or creative activity as well as a true commitment to the integration of that research with their teaching practices.

Dr. Engel has been with SIUE since 1993. His core expertise is in the area of integrated circuit design. A strong feature of his teaching is that Dr. Engel involves his students in much of his research. Together with his graduate students, Dr. Engel has designed several integrated circuits that have been successfully fabricated through MOSIS. He has also supervised 19 Master’s Theses, most of them dealing with the development of FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). Moreover, Dr. Engel is widely published, has garnered a steady stream of external funding, and holds nine U.S. patents.
