&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Purpose&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The Graduate School solicits proposals for FY 2011 research and creative projects that will lead to new research activities and creative endeavors. The activities could be to set a completely new research direction, or a new direction for ongoing work. Proposals should discuss how the funds will help stimulate research or creative activity and the potential for future increased research or creative activities as well as external funding. Recipients are expected to produce published scholarly works/products and externally sponsored grants/contracts.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Eligibility&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

The participation of colleagues from other institutions is encouraged, yet may be included only as cost share.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Award Description&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The Graduate School expects to make approximately 12-15 awards for a total of $250,000 - $300,000 for New Directions grants. Individual proposals can request up to $25,000 with the typical award amount ranging from $5,000-$10,000. Proposals may request the purchase of research equipment and research tools (research tools are defined as any non-consumable item, such as books, data sets, software, etc.), supplies, commodities, contractual services, and travel.&amp;nbsp;Proposals may request GAs and undergraduate students provided funds are expended by June 30, 2011 (expenses must be processed through Administrative Accounting and charged to the Graduate School's account). Due to the restrictions of the fiscal year, it will not be possible to provide funding for faculty assigned time for research or summer salary through this program. Funds must be expended by June 30, 2011.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;APPLICATION PROCEDURES&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;All applications must include the following required sections:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;ol&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Approval Form/ Cover Sheet&lt;/strong&gt; (&lt;a href="/id0904f67a8068b0dc"&gt;download here&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Proposal Narrative (5-10 pages, according to the spacing, proposal margins, and page formatting requirements defined by the National Science Foundation. Please see &lt;a href="http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf10_1/gpg_2.jsp"&gt;http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf10_1/gpg_2.jsp&lt;/a&gt;). See description below for components of your narrative.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Timetable. Please include a one-page timetable for the project (in addition to the narrative), from the desired beginning date to the anticipated date of completion. While proposals may describe research activities that extend beyond June 30, 2011, faculty are advised to include final reporting and grant submission activities in the timetable.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Budget Justification. A one-page narrative justification is required. Budget items may include equipment, supplies, commodities, contractual services, and travel. The participation of colleagues from other institutions is encouraged, yet may be included only as cost share.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;COS Expertise Profile or 3-page CV. Please submit a copy of each participating investigator's Community of Science (COS) Expertise Profile, or a 3-page curriculum vitae. Please ensure that the Profile or CV is up-to-date. If you need assistance completing or updating your Profile, please contact Patience Graybill Condellone or Christa Johnson.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
&lt;/ol&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Your &lt;strong&gt;narrative&lt;/strong&gt; (5-10 pages) should describe:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;ol&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Background, significance, and new direction;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Goals and specific objectives;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Procedures;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Methodology;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Anticipated outcomes (publications, performances, etc.);&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;External funding opportunities that will be targeted.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
&lt;/ol&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;REVIEW CRITERIA&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The primary evaluation criterion is the merit of the proposal. The ad-hoc committee will evaluate proposals according to the following criteria:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;bull; The originality/ creativity and significance of the proposed&amp;nbsp; research&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;bull; The clarity and appropriateness of the research design and procedure&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;bull; The research proposal&amp;rsquo;s potential for external funding &amp;amp; anticipated outcomes&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;bull; The demonstration of the project as a &amp;ldquo;new direction&amp;rdquo; for the researcher&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;REVIEW PROCESS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Proposals will be evaluated by a faculty committee appointed by the Graduate School.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;TERMS AND CONDITIONS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;ul&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;The submission of a final report and an external grant proposal is required after the completion of the project.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;Funds must be fully expended (&lt;span style="text-decoration:underline"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;all PO&amp;rsquo;s must be fully paid, all P-Card purchases reconciled, all expenses processed through Administrative Accounting and charged to the Graduate School's account&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;) by June 30, 2011.&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
&lt;/ul&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DEADLINES AND TIMELINE&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
