Hoppe because he believed in SIUE’s mission and the value of faculty research. Four years later, the Hoppe endowment became the basis for the Hoppe Research Faculty Award. The program recognizes faculty members on continuing, full-time appointments. The Hoppe Research Professor will be appointed for a two-year period, receive 50 percent assigned time for research each academic year, the services of a one-quarter time graduate assistant, and $1,000 in support lines.

About Joseph Hoppe

Joseph W. Hoppe was originally from Carlinville, Illinois. Although he never attended college he was a very successful business man and a banker by trade. Joseph Hoppe received an honorary degree from Blackburn College and, according to his son, it meant a great deal to him. He died of cancer in 1981 and left behind his wife, Mrs. Aline Hoppe, two sons, Guy and Don Hoppe, and his daughter Diane.

Past Winners

2013-2015 Gregory Fields, Department of Philosophy

2012-2014 Leah O'Brien, Department of Chemistry

2011-2013 Andrew Neath, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

2010-2012 Andy Lozowski, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

2009-2011 George Pelekanos, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

2008-2010 Allison Thomason, Department of Historical Studies

2006-2008 Michael Shaw, Department of Chemistry

2005-2007 Edward Sewell, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

2004-2006 Carole Frick, Department of Historical Studies

2003-2005 John Bryden, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

2002-2004 Urszula Ledzewicz, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

2001-2003 Ronald Schaefer, Department of English Language & Literature

2000-2002 Allison Funk, Department of English Language & Literature

2000-2002 Marian Smith, Department of Biological Sciences
