<h2>Hoppe Award Background</h2><p></p><h3>List of <a href="#winners">Past Winners</a></h3><p></p><h2>Establishment of the Award</h2><p><span>In 1976 a loan fund was established through the SIUE Foundation by Joseph W. Hoppe because he believed in SIUE’s mission and the value of faculty research. Four years later, the Hoppe endowment became the basis for the Hoppe Research Faculty Award. In 1999 this award was transformed with the help of SIUE academic deans into the current Hoppe Research Professor Program.</span></p><h2>The Hoppe Research Professor Award</h2><p><span>The Hoppe Research Professor Award is funded by the Hoppe Faculty Research Endowment; The SIUE Graduate School, and the SIUE Schools of Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering, Nursing; and the College of Arts and Sciences. The program recognizes faculty members on continuing, full-time appointments. The Hoppe Research Professor will be appointed for a two-year period, receive 50 percent assigned time for research each academic year, the services of a one-quarter time graduate assistant, and $1,000 in support lines.</span></p><h2>About Joseph Hoppe</h2><p><span>Joseph W. Hoppe was originally from Carlinville, Illinois. Although he never attended college he was a very successful business man and a banker by trade. Joseph Hoppe received an honorary degree from Blackburn College and, according to his son, it meant a great deal to him.
