Meet an SIUE Alum!
Eboni was born and raised in St. Louis. She earned two degrees at SIUE and works at the University as a community coordinator in the Office of Educational Outreach.
Hi Eboni! What do you love most about SIUE?
At SIUE, students aren’t just numbers. My professors went out of their way to get to know their students and make sure we understood what was being taught. It’s been nine years since I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, and my professors still know who I am. How awesome is that?!
Why did you choose SIUE?
SIUE afforded me the opportunity to be in close proximity to my family while I gained my independence. I grew both academically and professionally. SIUE is where I developed my sense of self, gained lifelong friends and became the woman I am today.
What’s your most memorable moment at SIUE?
My roommate and I were greeted at the door of our Cougar Village apartment by a wild turkey! Being from the city, we’d never seen a turkey just walking around. We still laugh about it!
What do you want students from the St. Louis area to know about SIUE?
It's close enough to still get amazing Sunday family meals, yet far enough away to gain your independence. One of my fears about choosing a college only 30 minutes away was that I would know too many people. But with more than 13,000 students enrolled, you have the opportunity to meet a new person every day for the next four years!
What’s your advice to incoming freshmen?
Be open to learning and experiencing new things. Use this time to find out about you! I came to college ready to experience life outside of my norm. I became friends with people who didn’t look like me, I took University sponsored trips to places I would have never gone otherwise, and I tried new foods and events, so that I could have an enriching college experience. Find out what else this world has to offer, and in doing so, you will find your place in this world.
