Financial Aid Academic Status Notification

Dear $SUBSCRIBER.FIRSTNAME,

United States Department of Education regulations, Illinois Student Assistance Commission rules and University policy require a student applying for and/or receiving federal, state and University financial assistance to maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to receive those funds. Students must be making satisfactory academic progress regardless of whether the student has previously had aid. The standards must be cumulative, and as such, all prior terms of attendance are included in the evaluation, per federal, state and University regulations. Students who have been academically suspended from the University are also suspended from financial aid and, if allowed to re-enroll, must successfully complete the financial aid reinstatement process or have an appeal granted in order to receive financial aid.

After grades were posted for the previous semester, you have not met one or more of the following standards to maintain good progress. The standards of satisfactory academic progress include the following criteria:

  • GPAStudents must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0. Only institutional credits are included in this calculation.
  • Overall Completion Rate: Federal and state regulations require all students to successfully complete at least 67% of their coursework. Completion rate is measured by dividing the number of cumulative hours successfully completed by the number of cumulative hours the student has attempted. Accepted transfer hours are included in this calculation.
  • Maximum Time Frame: To retain financial aid eligibility, a student must complete his or her degree program within 150% of the published program length of the program. Attempted hours include all SIUE courses as well as accepted transfer credit. Once a student reaches the maximum timeframe, he or she may be ineligible for financial aid.
  • Becoming an 'Unclassified' or 'Non-Degree-Seeking' Student.

    • Warning: Warning status lasts for one semester only (the next semester the student attends), during which the student may continue to receive aid.
    • Termination: A student who fails to make satisfactory academic progress during their "warning" semester is terminated from aid unless they successfully appeal and are placed on financial aid probation.
    • Ineligible: A student who becomes 'Unclassified' or 'Non-Degree Seeking.' Please contact our office for more information.
