Schools Offering New Concurrent MBA and DNP Program

The Schools of Business and Nursing have partnered to prepare advanced practice nurses and nursing administrators with a concurrent master’s in business administration (MBA) and a doctor of nursing practice (DNP).

The concurrent program is offered primarily online; includes two on-campus immersion experiences; and is beneficial for nurses with master’s preparation as administrators, nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, midwives or clinical nurse specialists.

Camp Inspires Students to Pursue Medical Careers

Twenty-five high school students from Madison and St. Clair counties in Illinois and St. Louis County participated in the seventh annual SIUE Healthcare Diversity Camp in June. The camp, which began in 2009, exposes minority high school students to healthcare careers they may not have considered, and involves the Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy and Dental Medicine.

“Participating in summer camp increases access to nursing and nursing opportunities for minority high school students,” said Dr. Jerrica Ampadu, assistant professor and assistant camp coordinator. “During summer camp, students are immersed in learning through simulation, as well as through interactions with nursing faculty."

Alumnus Makes Historic Solo Kayak Trip Around Hawaii’s Big Island

School of Nursing alumn Jenny Decker '06, a native of St. Louis, has made history as the first female and first documented solo kayaker to circumnavigate the Big Island in Hawaii.

From March 25-April 13, Decker battled the Pacific Ocean, paddling approximately 300 miles to achieve the incredible feat. Through her journey, Decker raised awareness, and $10,109 through her GoFundMe campaign, for Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT), an inherited neurological disorder from which she suffers.

“CMT can affect motor and sensory nerves, often resulting in muscle weakness, atrophy and sensory loss,” explained Decker. “Performing everyday tasks and completing adventures often pushes my body to its limits, leaving me exhausted or injured."

Student Finds True Calling in Patient Care

Nursing student Juliana Enoakpa Manyoh held a bachelor’s in management and a master’s in finance. But her goals in life were altered when her husband nearly died in an accident.

"He was hospitalized for about three weeks, and that was a turning point for me," said Manyoh, a student in the doctor of nursing practice program’s family nurse practitioner specialization (FNP DNP). "Being in the hospital and watching nurses take care of him changed my life and the life of my family. At that point, I felt like I had this call, that this is what I want to do. I want to spend the rest of my life taking care of people."

Manyoh travels four hours each way, nearly every week, from her home in the Quad Cities to attend SIUE’s hybrid FNP DNP program.

School Partners with Baptist Health Madisonville

Thanks to a new partnership with the School of Nursing, Baptist Health Madisonville (Kentucky) nurses can obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing in as little as one year from the comfort of their own homes and on a schedule that fits their lives.

“We are excited to work with Baptist Health to offer our online, accelerated RN to BS in nursing degree,” said Dr. Roberta Harrison, assistant dean for undergraduate programs at SIUE School of Nursing. “This is a great opportunity to reach more working nurses throughout Kentucky to offer our affordable, progressive and innovative online program.”
