Now more than half way through the fall semester, I am pleased to bring you some important highlights of recent student, alumni and faculty accomplishments from the School of Nursing. Student Excels at National Scholar Bowl

School of Nursing student Emily Robson took home top prize for using her knowledge on anesthesia-based topics at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) College Scholar Bowl. The event was held during the organization’s national conference in Salt Lake City in August. Robson represented SIUE on a team of six students studying at universities across the nation.

School Enters Into New Community Partnerships

The School of Nursing continues to create new and innovative community partnerships. Two recently announced agreements with Greenville College and Clay County Hospital help meet the need for bachelor’s prepared registered nurses in the area.

Faculty Named Nurses of the Year

Dr. Kim White and Dr. Val Yancey were winners at the March of Dimes’ fourth annual Nurse of the Year Award ceremonies Saturday, Oct. 10 in St. Louis. These awards honor nurses for extraordinary patient care, compassion and service.

Students Learn Integral Role of U.S. Army Nurses

School of Nursing students recently learned the important roles nurses play in the U.S. Army. Army Combat Medic Thomas Fortner gave students an on-campus glimpse into the conditions in which military surgical teams provide care, including during combat and humanitarian efforts.

School Awarded $1.08 Million Federal Grant

The School of Nursing has been awarded a three-year grant worth $1,085,903 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). This interdisciplinary grant provides funding for the School of Nursing, along with the Schools of Pharmacy and Dental Medicine, and the Department of Social Work, to greatly expand the scope of services provided at the WeCare Clinic on the School’s East St. Louis campus.

Dr. Perez Recognized as Emerging Nurse Leader

The 40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader award, sponsored by the Illinois Nurses Foundation and Illinois Healthcare Action Coalition, was presented to Dr. Amelia Perez on September 17 in Chicago. An assistant professor and coordinator of the Simulation Learning Center for Health Sciences, Perez was honored for her commitment to advancing the field.

Alumna Inducted to Hall of Fame

Dr. Wrenetha Julion, BS Nursing ’80, was recently inducted into the SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame. The recognition honors remarkable graduates who have achieved exploits in their fields, are role models, and are testament to SIUE’s educational experience.
