Welcome to the March 2023 edition of GradNews!  This monthly newsletter will include key information and resources to support your success as a graduate student at SIUE.  Each month we will bring you news about upcoming events, campus resources, research funding, professional development, campus engagement, and graduate student success stories.  Watch for GradNews coming to your email inbox each month!

In the Know: What's Happening on Campus

Symposium: Registration Deadline Saturday, March 18th 

Register now to present your work at the annual Graduate School Research Symposium on Tuesday, April 4th, 2023! Graduate students of all disciplines are invited to present their research or creative activity. Student presentations will take place in-person in the MUC, Goshen Lounge from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM. Deadline to register is Saturday, March 18th!

SIUE Career Fairs: Connect with Employment & Internship Opportunities

It’s almost career fair season! The Career Development Center is hosting four career fairs this spring. Please help us get the word out to students. 

  • Tuesday, Feb. 28 – IT Career Fair – MUC Conference Center - 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. 
  • Wednesday, March 1 – Business and CAS Career Fair – MUC Meridian Ballroom – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. 
  • Thursday, March 2 – Engineering Career Fair – MUC Meridian Ballroom – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. 
  • Tuesday, March 21 – Education Career Fair – MUC Conference Center – 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Register for Summer Session!

Registration opens March 28 for summer classes. Take advantage of nearly 1,000 summer courses and study on campus, or take an online course while working at home. 

Summer session is a great way to complete an extra course—saving money by staying on track to graduate. Many summer classes meet for five weeks or less. Benefit from small class sizes, and lighten your fall class load.

Student Needs Survey  

SIUE is doing the Student Needs Survey to understand student needs and improve campus services. Please check your emails for an invitation from Miriam Roccia, Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to participate. Survey participants can enter to win $100 in Cougar Bucks. Ten (10) winners will be selected.  

Resource Spotlight

English Workshops for International Students

SIUE's Intensive English Pathway now offers English training workshops starting this month! Students can choose from a variety of topics to practice verbal and written language skills. See this page for full details! 


Lovejoy Library: Virtual Help

Library services are available to graduate students virtually as well as in person.  If you're looking for virtual help, try the Ask a Librarian service to speak directly to a librarian over chat, text, or phone or make an appointment to meet with a librarian over zoom for help with all things research!

De-Stress with Mindfulness 

Take a break from studying to de-stress. 

There will be space and time for students to concentrate on their wellbeing during stressful times of mid-terms/finals. A counseling services therapist will speak to the group about the importance of selecting time to refocus, relax and practice relaxation techniques. The applicaiton and outcomes of these techniques will reach beyond the students’ college experience.

Research Grants for Graduate Students - Application Open Until April 1st

Are you a master's level student seeking funding to support your research endeavors?  The spring application period for RGGS is open as of March 1st, and the deadline to submit a proposal will be April 1st at 4:30pm.  Students may request up to $500 in funding, and must meet all eligibility and proposal requirements. The spring application period is ideal for students planning to conduct their research in the summer or fall of 2022.

Data Management:  Best Practices in RCR 

Join presenters Dr. Abigail Goben, University of Illinois Chicago, and Dr. Megan Sapp Nelson, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, for a presentation on responsible conduct in data management, data handling, ownership, publication, and reporting starting at 11:00 on April 13.  Register here.

Pyles

Meet Noah Pyles, student in Biologial Sciences 

Noah obtained his bachelor's degree from SIUE in biological sciences with a focus in genetics and cellular biology in May 2017 and then explored research in Phoenix Arizona before becoming a biological sciences master's student in 2021.He then conducted research on the root microbial communities present in Illinois orchids. For this research, he received funding from the SIUE Graduate School via a research grant as well as the Illinois Native Plant Society. As a current graduate student, he is the lead TA for the research greenhouse and has taught/aided in several lab courses including Genetics, Plant Anatomy, and Cell and Molecular Biology. 

Noah plans to enter a PhD program focused on plant breeding after he graduate with his master's in biological sciences. After obtaining his doctoral degree, he hopes to earn a job at the USDA where he can use his creative research skills to help solve challenging questions to enhance the cultivation of agriculturally significant tree crops. 

Dr. Esselman said about Noah, "Noah has been an exceptional hardworking student. He is curious about so many things and puts in the work to answer his questions. He has been very helpful in lab with everyone and is a joy to be around."
