Cougar Pride: Student & Alumni Highlights

Meet Cristian Rodrigo Tolava Torrico, Master in Civil Engineering student

While pursuing his under-graduate degree in Bolivia, Cristian discovered his passion towards structural design and construction. Cristian decided to continue his studies in the United States because of the similarities between US and Bolivia construction specifications. He received acceptance offers from several US universities but chose Southern Illinois University Edwardsville because of the multiple possibilities offered to an international student.

From Dr. John Cabage who supervises Cristian's research, "Mr. Torrico has been one of the best master’s degree scholars that I have worked with. We are conducting research disseminating the impact of the use of carbon and steel fibers within concrete. This research will directly impact the knowledge base available to all members of our construction community." He has won three scholarships: Concrete Council Award of St. Louis, ACI-International W. Gene Corley Memorial Scholarship,  and the Honorary Dr. David N. Richardson scholarship.

His long term plans are opening a general construction company and giving lectures. He also hopes to publish at least five papers from his current research. Cristian loves research and enjoys teaching and sharing experiences.
