Meet Michaela Kulasekara, MS student in Electrical & Computer Engineering

M Kulasekara

Michaela's college journey began at SIUE, and she received her BS in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics in the spring of 2019, graduating magna cum laude.  In her final semester of undergrad, Michaela began working with Dr. Jon Klingensmith as a researcher in the Biomedical Imaging Research Lab. Her research specifically targeted using spectral parameters from data gathered in echocardiography to identify different tissue types around the heart, specifically targeting fat around the heart. The end goal of this research is to help identify patients at risk of coronary artery disease. Her academic and research experiences led her to continue her education at SIUE, and she began the MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering program in the fall of 2019.

As a master's student, Michaela serves as the Teaching Assistant for ECE 326, the Electronic Circuits course. Electronic Circuits was one of Michaela's favorite courses as an undergraduate student, and she enjoys helping students understand the content in a hands-on lab setting. She is completing a wide array of courses as there are several disciplines within Electrical & Computer Engineering that match her interests. Last summer, Michaela secured an internship in electrical engineering with Leonardo DRS Land Systems, a major defense contracting company in St. Louis. She has agreed to work as an intern with them again this summer and has received a verbal offer to return to the company as a full-time Electrical Engineer upon her graduation. She looks forward to seeing where her higher education, research, and industry experiences will take her.
