Summer Assistantships

If you are still interested in finding an assistantship for summer, visit our website to view postings or contact the individual departments to find openings.  In addition to contacting your major department, you may consider looking at student affairs, the library, or other academic departments for opportunities.

If you already have an assistantship lined up for the summer, here are some important items to consider...

  • Do NOT begin working until you have signed your contract.  Students who begin working before the contract is processed may not receive payment for those days.
  • Please register for summer classes as soon as possible to ensure your contract will be processed before your first pay period.
  • Your assistantship includes a tuition waiver, provided it is for at least 8 weeks over the course of the summer.  You are still responsible for all fees.
  • Read the handbook

Please make sure to monitor your tuition waiver via CougarNET once you receive the confirmation email from the Graduate School that your contract has been processed, please email graduateschool@siue.edu.

Summer Tuition Waivers

If you are working in a graduate assistant positin for at least 8 weeks of the summer you qualify for a tuition waiver.  There is no need to submit a form or contact the Graduate School in order for your waiver to be applied.

If you are a former graduate assistant wishing to take advantage of the "Earned Summer Tuition Waiver" you must submit the Tuition Waiver Adjustment Form to the Graduate School at least 2 weeks before your summer course(s) begin.

Youare eligible to use this form if:

  1. You have at least a 3.0 cumulative graduate GPA
  2. You worked the 2 terms preceding summer 2019 and did not terminate any of those contracts early.
  3. You have not used an Earned Summer Tuition Waiver previously.

For more information about Earned Summer Tuition Waivers see page 14 of the GA Handbook or the tuition waiver policy for former graduate assistants (Policy 4F1).

Graduating Summer 2019?

Here are a few important deadlines you need to follow before graduation:

  • If you are completing a thesis (not a final project), the Registration of Title form is due to the Registrar's Office the first day of the semester in which you want to graduate.  If you will be doing research with human subjects, you must complete human subjects training and submit an IRB Protocol.
  • The Graduate School's summer thesis workshop is May 22nd at 2:30 (click here to RSVP).  If you have not already attended a thesis workshop and you are completing a thesis for summer 2019 graduation we strongly encourage you to attend!
  • Every student must apply for graduation, regardless of whether you wish to participate in commencement.  Graduate applications must be submitted by the first day of the semester in which you want to graduate.
  • Commencement ceremonies are held at the end of fall and spring.  For more information please refer to the Commencement website.

Thesis Deadlines and Upcoming Workshops

Your final thesis or dissertation must follow specific formatting guidelines and be submitted electronically for approval by the Graduate School. Our website provides the details regarding these requirements.

Also, keep in mind that just submitting your thesis doesn't mean that you are finished! Read this important material about revisions and resubmissions.

Final thesis submission is due May 28, 2019.  All formatting requirements must have been completed and submitted by the deadline.  Theses not submitted by the deadline will result in a delay in graduation.

If you are completing a thesis in summer, fall, or next spring, please attend a thesis workshop to understand the guidelines and submission process.  Dates are listed on our website.
