Welcome to Spring 2019!

Happy first week of spring classes.  If you are new to SIUE, or even if you need some resources, visit SIUE 101 on Blackboard.  Take a moment to familiarize yourself with policies, expectations, and resources that are available to you.
The newsletter this semester will provide information about thesis resources, graduate assistant resources, funding opportunities, and the Graduate School Research Symposium.

Assistantships and GA Orientation

IMPORTANT! The Graduate School will be conducting a spring Graduate Assistant Orientation February 12th from 10-12 in the Maple/Dogwood room in the MUC. This training will contain important information for ALL graduate assistants, not just new GA’s. Please mark your calendar! We strongly encourage you to attend so that you are fully aware of your rights and responsibilities as a graduate assistant.

If you are still interested in finding an assistantship for spring, visit our website to view postings or contact the individual departments to find openings. In addition to contacting your major department, you may consider looking at student affairs, the library, or other academic departments for opportunities.

If you already have an assistantship lined up for the spring, here are some important items to consider...

  • Do NOT begin working until you have signed your contract. Students who begin working before the contract is processed may not receive payment for those days.
  • Your assistantship may provide a tuition waiver. You are still responsible for all fees.
  • Read the handbook!
  • If you make any changes to your classes once the semester begins, contact the Graduate School right away. Even if it seems like a simple switch, it may impact your tuition waiver and we need to update the system.

Please send an email to graduateschool@siue.edu if you have any questions.

Thesis Workshops, Guidelines, and Deadlines

If you are completing a thesis as a part of your graduation requirements, your final thesis or dissertation must follow specific formatting guidelines and be submitted electronically for approval by the Graduate School. The Graduate School will host three workshops to help students understand the guidelines required for submission. We strongly encourage all students completing a thesis to attend a workshop one year before they plan to graduate. If you have not yet attended a workshop and will be submitting your thesis this semester, you are still encouraged to attend a workshop this month.

The workshops will be held in the Graduate School Conference room on the following dates:
Tuesday, January 22nd at 4:30pm
Wednesday, January 23rd at 2:30pm
Saturday, January 26th at 10:00am

Students only need to attend one workshop. Please RSVP to the Graduate School graduateschool@siue.edu or 618-650-3010.

Please visit the Thesis Website for detailed information to assist you in completing your thesis.

2019 Graduate School Symposium

All graduate students within one year of graduation are encouraged to participate in the Symposium on Monday, April 1st, 2019.  Students will have an opportunity to display their creative works and research.  These displays may be in the form of a poster, a sculpture, spoken word, performance, computer program, or any other format that highlights your work in your graduate program.  The Symposium is an opportunity for you to highlight your academic work and practice for future presentations of your work.  If you have not yet completed your project, you can still participate and discuss your methods and expectations.

Please visit the 2019 Graduate School Symposium webpage for more information.  Later this month we will send out a call for presenters.
