Graduate Assistants

Welcome Graduate Assistants for the 2017-2018 school year! Hopefully by now you have signed your contracts and began work. Please keep in mind that if you haven’t signed your contract, or your contract was signed late that your first paycheck will probably be delayed. Also, please notify the graduate school (cmcguig@siue.edu) if your course load changes because this may affect your tuition waiver.  Do not start working until you have signed your contract!

I wanted to remind you of the GA training opportunities coming up. All GA’s, regardless of experience level, are encouraged to attend an orientation this fall (details below). Vital information will be presented at these orientations that could greatly enhance your graduate assistant experience.

Tuesday, August 28th 10:00-12:00, MUC Mississippi Room- This orientation option will include a panel of experienced GA’s to help answer questions.

Congratulations on your new position! If you haven’t already done so, check out the Graduate Assistant Handbook for more info.

Graduate Program Directors

By now you should all be familiar with your Graduate Program Director and/or advisor.  You should meet with the GPD/Advisor either in person or through email at least once per semester to make sure you are on track academically.  They can also help you determine next steps after graduation.  If you have any issues or questions about your personal or professional development, make an appointment with your GPD/Advisor.

Topics to discuss:

  • Post Graduation Goals and how to prepare for them during your degree
  • Career Opportunities
  • Research and Internship Opportunities
  • How to select a Thesis or Final Project Topic
  • Professional Organization Involvement
  • Publishing and Presenting
  • Graduate School Life Balance
Graduate Program Directors may change each year, so be sure to check the Graduate Catalog for the current GPD's.

Thesis Guidelines and Workshops

If you are preparing for your final thesis or dissertation, there are specific formatting guidelines that you must follow in order for it to be complete. The Graduate School has provided those guidelines for you on their website, along with all of the deadline dates that you will need to be aware of. Please make every effort to read the guidelines and to follow their instruction. They will be able to keep you from having several rounds of revisions and will make your final thesis the beautiful work it was intended to be.

We will also be hosting Thesis Workshops for those that need a more interactive approach to address thesis formatting issues. These workshops are designed to assist students with formatting their thesis properly at the beginning of the writing process, therefore making the review period for both student and reviewer much quicker and easier. If the student’s thesis is not formatted properly and approved by the chair by the established deadline, the student’s graduation will be deferred to the next term. There are 3 workshops scheduled, so please make every effort to attend.
