IRIS Center Presents Digital Community Engagement with Washington Park, Nov. 15

The IRIS Center will present Digital Community Engagement with Washington Park:

Sociology and environmental science graduate students are working with Derissa Davis, an elementary teacher in the Village of Washington Park, to help materialize her vision of a community garden. Members of The Tiny Children’s Garden Team will present a synopsis of their use of digital tools to practice applied sociology, and to amplify the voices and desires of their collaboration partner and her community.

The team will provide an overview of the digital pieces and outline their role in the collaboration, including how they contribute to shifting the dominant deficit-based narrative of the community to one that highlights the community’s rich cultural capital.

Coffee and pastries will be served.

Kindermusik announces its new 4-week class offerings.

Lace up your sneakers, we're going out on the town! We'll visit the city and see what there is to see, then head out into the country to check that out, too. Segue Features CAS Alum Von Nida’s Career with Madison County

On this week’s episode of Segue, SIUE’s weekly radio program exploring the lives and work of the people on campus and beyond, Greg Budzban, PhD, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) dean, interviews Mark Von Nida, Madison County circuit clerk and the newest CAS representative in the SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame.

The interview airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Listeners can tune in to WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound or siue.edu/wsie.

Von Nida graduated with a bachelor’s in government in 1985. Since then, he has dedicated his career to Madison County government. He has served four terms as county clerk and is currently serving his second term as circuit clerk. Throughout his years serving Madison County, he has received national recognition as an innovator in the field.

Women's Shelter Collection Drive through Nov. 21

The “Let's Hear it for the Girls!” collection drive for women homeless shelters in the St. Louis-Metro East area is underway.

Madalynn McKenzie, a senior and student senator for the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, is collecting clean, gently used bras, feminine products and newly packed underwear for women in homeless shelters.

Please drop off your items in the Student Government office, Student Success Center, room 1280. Items will be collected until Thursday, Nov. 21.

Limited Submissions for NSF MRI Program

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation Grant (MRI) program accepts applications for projects to purchase major equipment in support of outstanding research initiatives in a region.

Limit on number of proposals per organization:
NSF limits the number of proposals submitted by an organization to the following:

  • Two proposals – Track 1: fund request greater than $100,000 but less than $1,000,000 and 1 proposal; Track 2: fund request greater than or equal to $1,000,000 and up to and including $4,000.

Notice of Intent email should be submitted to Diane Cox at diacox@siue.edu or 650-5886 by Thursday, Nov. 21. Pre-proposal applications are due by Thursday, Dec. 12.

Call for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award Applications, Due Nov. 22

SIUE is pleased to announce the solicitation of nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. 

This annual award recognizes both an outstanding community member and an SIUE faculty/staff member who exemplifies the humanitarian qualities and philosophy of nonviolent social change as espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The winner will be recognized at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Luncheon at SIUE on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020. 

Nominations for this prestigious award are invited. Please consider nominating someone in your office or affiliate organization(s). Additional information, including the Call for Nominations and Nomination Form can be found at siue.edu/csdi/events
