Khadka researched landslide susceptibility mapping along the road corridor from Bandeu to Barabise and sediment loss estimation in the Sindhupalchwok District, Nepal.

The STEM Journal Club is an open campus group sponsored by Lovejoy Library and the STEM Center. Our meetings are devoted to discussing STEM research (on or off campus) and/or relevant journal articles on any STEM subject. Please join the conversation!

Gerald “Jerry” O’Brien, PhD, professor in the Department of Social Work, will present the 2019 Going Lecture for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS):

His topic will be “Eugenics, Genetic Innovations and the Minority Group Model of Disability.” Sign language interpreters will be present during the free lecture.

A panel discussion will take place following the Going Lecture. Panelists will include Cathy Contarino, executive director, Impact Center for Independent Living in Alton; Dominic Dorsey, director of SIUE’s Accessible Campus Community and Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) Office; Alison Reiheld, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy; and E. Duff Wrobbel, PhD, chair and professor in the Department of Applied Communication Studies.

O’Brien is the recipient of the 2019 William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award in CAS, which recognizes faculty in the College who have outstanding teaching, scholarly accomplishments and/or creative activity.

The award is open to all full-time, tenure-track faculty and carries a stipend. The endowed professorship lasts for one year, and awardees provide a public presentation or lecture at the end of this appointed time.

Free Dental Care at SIU SDM’s Veteran’s Care Day, Nov. 14

The SIU School of Dental Medicine will provide free dental care to veterans on Thursday, Nov. 14 during its second annual Veteran’s Care Day at the SDM’s main clinic in building 263, 2800 College Ave. in Alton.

SIU SDM third- and fourth-year dental students, under the supervision of dental school faculty who are all licensed dentists, will provide free exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions at no cost.

Reservations for the SIU SDM Veterans Dental Care Day are required. Due to the high demand for dental services realized at last year’s event, appointments will be made available based on reservation order until all appointments are filled. Walk-in appointments will not be available the day of the event.

IRIS Center Presents Digital Community Engagement with Washington Park, Nov. 15

The IRIS Center will present Digital Community Engagement with Washington Park:

Sociology and environmental science graduate students are working with Derissa Davis, an elementary teacher in the Village of Washington Park, to help materialize her vision of a community garden. Members of The Tiny Children’s Garden Team will present a synopsis of their use of digital tools to practice applied sociology, and to amplify the voices and desires of their collaboration partner and her community.

The team will provide an overview of the digital pieces and outline their role in the collaboration, including how they contribute to shifting the dominant deficit-based narrative of the community to one that highlights the community’s rich cultural capital.

Coffee and pastries will be served.

Payroll Deduction Option Available for Student Fitness Center Membership

SIUE faculty and staff will have the option to sign up for payroll deduction for a Student Fitness Center membership.

  • Membership is in effect from the date that you sign up through December 1, 2020
  • Four equal payments of $60 will be deducted from each January and February paycheck

You can sign up through the end of November at the Student Fitness Center Reception Desk.

Know an Outstanding Student Leader? Encourage Them to Apply to be an Resident Assistant!

The 2020-2021 Resident Assistant application is now open. The RA application can be found online.

Resident Assistant qualifications include:

  • Turn in a completed application by the appropriate deadline: 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4
  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA by the time you assume the position (RAs are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA)
  • Cannot be graduating before May 2021
  • Cannot be involved with a full-time internship/co-op, student teach, or enrolled in the School of Pharmacy program during the 2020-2021 academic year
  • Have lived in University Housing for at least two full semesters by the time you would begin as an RA (summer is counted as a semester)
  • Be in good financial, academic and behavioral conduct standing with the University.

SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School's (CHS) annual Angel Tree giving campaign is underway.

This is your opportunity to make this holiday season a memorable one for the students at CHS.

As winter approaches, the CHS staff would like to ensure that all of its students experience the joy of the holiday season. This year, the goal is to give every CHS student a new sweatshirt and to give additional winter gear to the neediest students.

Unfortunately, our students have needs year round for things like school supplies and school uniforms. This year, please consider making a recurring donation that will help to make CHS students successful all year long.

Now through Friday, Dec. 13, we will be accepting donations to the Angel Tree giving program. Click here to donate to CHS Angel Tree online using a credit card.
