This ServSafe® course, conducted by faculty from the SIUE nutrition degree program, is for individuals preparing for the exam. After attending the ServSafe® course and passing the proctored, multiple-choice exam with a score of 75 percent or higher, you will receive a ServSafe® certificate.

To receive and maintain certification, all individuals are required to pass a certification exam every five years. You will need to purchase the most recent edition of the ServSafe® Manager book with the online exam code. A link to purchase the book will be provided.

Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Award Deadline, Nov. 8

The New Investigator Awards are made to tenure-track SIUE faculty members to recognize and support individual programs of research or creative activities. These awards recognize faculty members whose research or creative activities have the promise of making significant contributions to their fields of study, their respective school/department and to SIUE, in general. Recipients are expected to produce published scholarly works/products and externally sponsored grants/contracts.

As many as two Lindsay New Investigator Awards will be made per year, pending availability of funds. These awards are designed to support a significant and discrete portion of a faculty member’s larger research agenda. A cost-share equaling 20 percent of the total award is required from the applicant’s school/department. Each recipient of the New Investigator Award will receive $10,000 from the Graduate School and $2,500 from their unit for a one-year period.

Application is due to the Office of Research and Projects by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019.

SIUE Ice Hockey Club to Auction Jerseys for Military Appreciation Day Game, Nov. 9

The SIUE Ice Hockey Club will host their sixth Annual Military Appreciation Day game against the Saint Louis Billikens:

SIUE will wear a camouflage jersey design during the game, and individuals will be able to acquire the jerseys through a silent auction. A portion of the proceeds from the jersey sales will benefit the USO of Missouri, Inc.

In previous years, the SIUE Club Ice Hockey team has donated more than $2,000 to the USO of Missouri, Inc. All current and retired military members will receive free admission with their military identification.

Nominations for SIUE Student Leader of the Month Open Until Nov. 10

The Kimmel Student Involvement Center, in partnership with the Edwardsville Rotary, is pleased to accept nominations for the SIUE Student Leader of the Month.

Individuals selected for this award will be recognized at an upcoming Rotary meeting, and at the annual Kimmel Leadership Awards Ceremony during the spring semester.

SIUE students can be nominated by students, faculty or staff. No self-nominations will be considered. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis, and should be received by the 10th of the month to be considered for that month's award. Any nominees not selected for one month, will be considered for the following months. Awards will be given for September through April each academic year.

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • High academic standards
  • Campus involvement and activities
  • Service to others on and off campus
  • Leadership within their academic area or within an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to promote spirit and pride at SIUE

Food Drive for Food Recovery Network through Nov. 10

Since August, the Campus Kitchen at SIUE, an affiliation of The Campus Kitchens Project, has been in the process of transitioning to an affiliated chapter of Food Recovery Network, the largest student-led movement to end food waste and hunger.

The mission and operations of the Food Recovery Network at SIUE will remain the same as Campus Kitchen.

Similar to previous years, the Food Recovery Network at SIUE will once again host a food drive for “Give Thanks, Give Food.” This themed food drive will collect nonperishable and canned food donations that will be used to make Thanksgiving meal grocery bags for Community Care Center clients in Granite City.

Donations can be purchased through Sunday, Nov. 10 for free delivery to Food Recovery Network at SIUE at yougivegoods.com/siue-turkeypalooza-2019.

Donation boxes will be located in the Student Fitness Center, Kimmel Student Involvement Center, Lovejoy Library (Information Desk), Peck Hall and Rendleman Hall.

The items requested for the Give Thanks, Give Food Drive include:

SIUE’s Gerald O’Brien, PhD, professor in the Department of Social Work within the College of Arts and Sciences, will present the annual William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship public lecture.

O’Brien will present “Eugenics, Genetic Innovations and the Minority Group Model of Disability.” Following the lecture, he will be joined by panelists Cathy Contarino, IMPACT Center for Independent Living executive director, Dominic Dorsey, SIUE ACCESS Office director, Alison Reiheld, PhD, associate professor in the SIUE Department of Philosophy, and Duff Wrobbel, PhD, professor and chair of the SIUE Department of Applied Communication Studies.

In February 2019, O’Brien received the William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award in CAS, which honors faculty who fundamentally connect their scholarship to their teaching and transform students’ lives. O’Brien’s scholarly work centers on historical eugenics and contemporary bioethics, and brings a disability perspective to the issues. O’Brien’s research also considers the relationship of pejorative metaphor themes to social injustice movements.

Sign language interpreters will be present during the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

Limited Submissions for NSF MRI Program

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation Grant (MRI) program accepts applications for projects to purchase major equipment in support of outstanding research initiatives in a region.

Limit on number of proposals per organization:
NSF limits the number of proposals submitted by an organization to the following:

  • Two proposals – Track 1: fund request greater than $100,000 but less than $1,000,000 and 1 proposal; Track 2: fund request greater than or equal to $1,000,000 and up to and including $4,000.

Notice of Intent email should be submitted to Diane Cox at diacox@siue.edu or 650-5886 by Thursday, Nov. 21. Pre-proposal applications are due by Thursday, Dec. 12.

Payroll Deduction Option Available for Student Fitness Center Membership

SIUE faculty and staff will have the option to sign up for payroll deduction for a Student Fitness Center membership.

  • Membership is in effect from the date that you sign up through December 1, 2020
  • Four equal payments of $60 will be deducted from each January and February paycheck

You can sign up through the end of November at the Student Fitness Center Reception Desk.

SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School's (CHS) annual Angel Tree giving campaign is underway.

This is your opportunity to make this holiday season a memorable one for the students at CHS.

As winter approaches, the CHS staff would like to ensure that all of its students experience the joy of the holiday season. This year, the goal is to give every CHS student a new sweatshirt and to give additional winter gear to the neediest students.
