Reading of Ginsberg's "Howl," Oct. 8

Jeffrey Skoblow, PhD, emeritus professor of English, and Eric Ruckh, PhD, associate professor of history in the Department of Historical Studies and director of Honors Program, will read Allen Ginsberg’s "Howl" on one of the small knolls in the Main Quad. The pair will be joined by itinerant artists and musicians.

12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 8
SIUE Quad

Ginsberg wrote "Howl" in Berkeley, Calif. in 1954-1955, and read it for the first time at the Six Gallery in San Francisco on Oct. 7, 1955. Ginsberg’s reading of "Howl" is a signal moment in the history of American culture and letters. With this poem, Ginsberg aligns spirit and body, breadth and idea—“that’s the measure, one physical-mental aspiration contained in the elastic of a breadth”—to assault the madness of American culture and society (then and now), and redeem the holiness of the body and its manifold, myriad pleasures.

For some years now, we have been reading and re-reading Ginsberg’s "Howl." We hope many of you will join us.

For more information, please contact Ruckh at eruckh@siue.edu.

Come and go as your schedule allows.

Due to the recent Collective Bargaining Agreement, new initiatives, and standard University evolution over the past decade, Faculty Senate’s role in University work has shifted and needs to be realigned with the University’s mission of shared governance.

Our focus and engagement in shared governance requires some “course correction” in order to fit the needs of the faculty, within the changing landscape of SIUE, and ensure that faculty continue to have an effective voice at SIUE.

At the All Faculty Meeting, we will hold guided discussions to gather faculty input about these potential changes.

Topics to be discussed:
• Current and future faculty responsibilities
• Current challenges in shared governance
• Increasing faculty involvement in Faculty Senate
