Chancellor Pembrook Looks Forward to New Academic Year on Segue

On this week’s episode of Segue, SIUE’s weekly radio program exploring the lives and work of the people on campus and beyond, CAS Dean Greg Budzban interviews Chancellor Randy Pembrook. A budding tradition on the show has been to feature the chancellor at the beginning of the academic year to discuss what’s happening throughout the University.

This Segue episode airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. Listeners can tune in to WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound or siue.edu/wsie.

He served as the house drummer for NBC’s “Maya and Marty,” starring Maya Rudolph and Martin Short.

Reading of Ginsberg's "Howl," Oct. 8

Jeffrey Skoblow, PhD, emeritus professor of English, and Eric Ruckh, PhD, associate professor of history in the Department of Historical Studies and director of Honors Program, will read Allen Ginsberg’s "Howl" on one of the small knolls in the Main Quad. The pair will be joined by itinerant artists and musicians.

12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 8
SIUE Quad

Ginsberg wrote "Howl" in Berkeley, Calif. in 1954-1955, and read it for the first time at the Six Gallery in San Francisco on Oct. 7, 1955. Ginsberg’s reading of "Howl" is a signal moment in the history of American culture and letters. With this poem, Ginsberg aligns spirit and body, breadth and idea—“that’s the measure, one physical-mental aspiration contained in the elastic of a breadth”—to assault the madness of American culture and society (then and now), and redeem the holiness of the body and its manifold, myriad pleasures.

For some years now, we have been reading and re-reading Ginsberg’s "Howl." We hope many of you will join us.

For more information, please contact Ruckh at eruckh@siue.edu.

Hoppe Research Professor Award

The Graduate School is seeking applications for the Hoppe Research Professor Award.

The Hoppe Research Professor Award is designed to support a significant and discrete portion of a faculty member's larger research agenda.

Pending availability of funds, the Hoppe Research Professor will be appointed for a two-year period. A Hoppe Research Professor Award recipient on a nine-month appointment will receive two course buyouts each academic year (up to six credit hours total), services of a graduate assistant at 25 percent effort for nine months per year, and $1,000 in support lines. If the Hoppe Research Professor Award recipient is on a 12-month appointment, the awardee will receive services of a graduate assistant at 50 percent effort for 12 months, and $4,000 each year in support lines (student wages or a graduate assistant).

The cost for the course releases is shared with the school/college. The Graduate School will fund up to one three-hour course buyout per year. In order to develop an appropriate scope of work, applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss the intended course releases with the school/college before submitting an application. Additional course buyouts above the two funded by the award is a negotiation point to be discussed between the applicant and the school/college.

Applicants must submit a completed proposal (cover pages, project summary, narrative, references, external funding summary CV, appendix [optional]) and cover sheet to their Department Chair. Application materials are available on the Hoppe Research Professor Award page. Please check with your department for their deadline.

Ranked applications are due to the Office of Research and Projects by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9.
