Think drawing is a gift that must come naturally? Drawing is a skill that can be developed with practice. You will learn how to draw with proper techniques, discovering how to represent what you see through studies in contour drawing, perspective, positive/negative space and value. With feedback from an expert instructor, you will improve your drawing and develop a deeper understanding of any subject you are trying to capture as an artist or designer.

Segue Features Historian Portwood on WSIE

On this week’s episode of Segue, SIUE’s weekly radio program exploring the lives and work of the people on campus and beyond, Chancellor Randy Pembrook interviews Shirley Portwood, professor emeritus in the Department of Historical Studies and former SIU Board of Trustees member.

This episode of Segue airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22. Listeners can tune in to WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound or siue.edu/wsie.

Portwood earned both her bachelor’s and master’s in history from SIUE before earning a second master’s and PhD in history at Washington University in St. Louis. Her teaching career began in 1972 at St. Louis Community College in Forest Park. She returned to SIUE in 1980, spending most of her career as a faculty member in the Department of Historical Studies.

Are you interested in learning how to swim? Join Campus Recreation for adult beginner swim lessons starting Sept. 23-Oct. 17. Choose from two different levels and two days that fit your schedule.

Level 1: Developing comfort in the water
Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays

Level 2: Learning basic swimming skills

Access to the Vadalabene Center Indoor Pool is FREE for faculty and staff. Campus Recreation requires a signed liability waiver form, please visit the Student Fitness Center Reception Desk. All participants at the Indoor Pool are required to check-in with the lifeguard on duty and swipe their SIUE card for access.

Nominations for Honorary Degrees and Distinguished Service Award

The Honorary Degrees and Distinguished Service Award Committee invites nominations from the University community for consideration. All departments and schools are asked to consider and submit deserving nominations.

Enter the Graduate School's Visualizing Research Impacts Competition

The Graduate School is accepting entries for The Visualizing Research Impacts (VRI) Competition.

The VRI competition is designed to encourage SIUE scholars to show the results and impacts of their research to the public through images. The image can be a photo, drawing, painting, collage, etc.  Scholars can create the image themselves or collaborate with someone to create the image. 

All entries must be submitted by close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 1

It is open to SIUE faculty, staff and students who are currently involved in a research project or creative activity at SIUE. 

Prizes will be awarded for (1) Best Representation of Research Impact ($1,500) and (2) Most Creative Representation of Research Impact ($1,500).
