The first Inclusive Conversation of the semester will be held:

The topic is Microaggressions in the Classroom. There will be a video presentation prior to the discussion.

The CSDI is located on the second floor of the Morris University Center (MUC). Feel free to bring your lunch. To Go Lunch orders can also be made at Fixin's Restaurant on MUC second floor, by calling extension 2465.

Inclusive Conversations are designed to support critical conversations and understanding of campus climate issues for students, faculty and staff; social justice; and the collective responsibility to build a sustainable campus environment -- one which embodies citizenship, excellence, inclusion, integrity and wisdom.

Nominate an Accessibility Champion by Today

The Office for Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) invites you to nominate an SIUE community member, who you feel goes above and beyond to promote and defend accessibility throughout the SIUE campus community, both in and outside of the classroom, and should be recognized as a Champion of Accessibility.

The criteria for student nominees are as follows:

  • Actively engage with the ACCESS office and also participates in ACCESS-related events activities
  • Promote of accessibility, inclusion, awareness, and equity for themselves and their peers
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Vigorously dispels negative stigma and stereotypes related to students with disabilities and the ACCESS office

The criteria for faculty/staff nominees are as follows:

  • Help remove barriers for students with disabilities for full inclusion and participation in programs and services
  • Cooperate in promoting acceptance and awareness for students with disabilities in all aspects of the University and community life
  • Advocate for the civil rights of students with disabilities in order to increase their participation in the SIUE community
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Make contributions in addition to normal job requirements or when the achievements of students with disabilities are not likely to be recognized by other organizations
  • Significantly improve or enhance the quality of the higher educational experience in ways that make a substantial difference for a student with a disability

Learn More About Give 30 Mentoring Program

The Madison County Regional Office of Education and the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB) invite you and your students to a meeting about the Madison County Give 30 Mentoring Program.

SIUE Information and Training Meeting:
1-3 p.m.

SIUE Lovejoy Library Friends Corner (main floor)

Stay for the first 30 minutes of the meeting to learn about Give 30. Stay for the rest of the meeting, if you are ready to register as a potential mentor and save time by completing mandatory training and fingerprinting right away.

SIUE students selected as Give 30 mentors will commit to spending 30 minutes per week visiting a local teenager who has been through a disciplinary process or is otherwise struggling.

Instructor Taylor Donohoo will present the information.

The SEHHB will provide cookies and drinks.

Registration for Saturday Youth Swim Lessons at the Student Fitness Center ends today.

There are six, 45-minute sessions
10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Saturday, Sept. 14 -Saturday, Oct. 19
Vadalabene Center Indoor Pool

Capacity for each class is 25 participants. SIUE students can register their child for $45, and SIUE faculty and staff can register their child for $60.

Parents and/or legal guardians must register their child for the swim lesson program.

She will discuss why hijab snatching within particular contexts is sexual harassment, and why the dynamics between non-Muslim America and Muslim Americans matter in our conversations on #MeToo.

Segue Features Social Work Chair Jill Schreiber on WSIE

On this week's episode of Segue, SIUE's weekly radio program exploring the lives and work of the people on campus, Greg Bubzban, College of Arts and Sciences dean, interviews Jill Schreiber, the incoming Department of Social Work chair.

This episode of Segue airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. Listeners can tune to WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound or siue.edu/wsie.

Schreiber was hired as a faculty member at SIUE in 2013. Previously, she taught and studied social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned both her master's and doctorate in social work.

College of Arts and Sciences Dean Greg Budzban is the guest speaker for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium:

"Introduction to Algebraic Probability via Markov Chains?"

Much of modern mathematics involves the use of algebraic methods to shed light in areas of classical analysis, and probability theory is no exception.

Markov's chain theory provides an intuitive pathway into the techniques of algebraic probability. This talk will provide an introduction to algebraic probability and present a conjecture concerning an unsolved problem in temporally non-homogeneous Markov chains.
