Segue on WSIE Celebrates 10 Years of XFest

On this week’s episode of Segue, SIUE’s weekly radio program exploring the lives and work of the people on campus, Greg Bubzban, College of Arts and Sciences dean, interviews Grant Andree, Arts and Issues director, and Chuck Harper, theater and dance department chair, about Xfest’s 10th anniversary.

The interview airs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. Listeners can tune in to WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound or siue.edu/wsie.

SIUE’s Xfest is a week-long festival celebrating alternative theater and dance from around the country. The 10th anniversary festival features five different performing acts that will teach workshops for students in addition to giving performances. Watch for These Fall Groups Forming in Counseling Services

Fall Groups for students interested in a group therapy experience are currently forming. The groups that will be offered this semester are: 

Mindful Mondays: Mondays 1-2:30 p.m.
Focus on improving overall wellness by discussing and practicing coping skills, mindfulness, self-care and distress tolerance skills. 

Survivors of Silence: Tuesdays 1-2:30 p.m.
(Facilitated by a Call for Help Counselor)
Gain empowering, confidential and free support for survivors of sexual violence. 

Understanding Myself and Others: Wednesdays OR Fridays 1-2:30 p.m.
Gain support and learn more about yourself, by giving and receiving interpersonal feedback from a variety of group members and leaders. 

Powerful Minds: Fridays 10-11:30 a.m.
Learn and apply cognitive-behavioral techniques that can help in managing stress, anxiety and depression. Identify and decrease unhelpful thought patterns. 

Students can discuss the process of joining a group by calling Counseling Services at 650-2842. Students interested in Survivors of Silence are asked to contact Call for Help directly at 618-397-0975 to set up a brief screening appointment.

Visit the Beet Box on the Quad, Tuesdays

Stop by the Beet Box Mobile Farmers Market on the Quad this fall!

Noon-1:30 p.m.
Tuesdays through the end of October

Fresh vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and more, will be available for purchase. The Beet Box accepts cash or card. Customers can also use their Illinois Link Card.

Details on the Beet Box’s weekly stops are available on the Goshen Market Foundation’s Facebook page.

The market on wheels is among the initiatives supported by SIUE’s food sustainability consortium, a constellation of courses, projects and services related to agricultural education and food access.

Put on your overalls and boots—it’s off to the barnyard for some farm-time fun! You’ll discover plants, animals, songs, sounds and games, as you have fun exploring all there is to do Around the Farm.  And then … get ready for lots of ribbity-hopping, trumpety-stomping and oinkity-rolling!  Animals a-Dancing uses the movements and sounds of frogs, elephants and pigs to emphasize how many movements you can make with your body, and how many sounds you can make with your voice.

Pick up your baby and dance. Dance the Charleston, the Tango and the Cha-Cha, and learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills—from head-to-toe. In this class, play a variety of baby appropriate instruments, a dance with fun props.

Lace up your sneakers, we're going out on the town! We'll visit the city and see what there is to see, then head out into the country to check that out, too. Bear will, of course, go over the mountain and go a-yodeling, too. Come along! You never know what adventures you'll have when you're On the Town with Bear.

All classes will be held on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at SIUE in partnership with the SIUE Suzuki Program. Classes are 45 minutes. Class times are subject to change due to enrollment numbers. 

Tuition includes all class fees and high-quality at-home materials package. The non-refundable class fee is due in full with registration form and confirms your space in the class. At least one participating adult must accompany the child(ren) in all classes. Do not bring non-enrolled siblings.

Sessions are 45 minutes in length.

Faculty, staff and Student Fitness Center members can reserve a board for just $10. Space is limited. Registration is available at the Student Fitness Center reception desk.

Please bring your SIUE ID card.

Please note, access to the Vadalabene Center Indoor Pool is FREE for faculty and staff. Campus Recreation requires a signed liability waiver form. Please visit the Student Fitness Center Reception Desk.

All participants at the Indoor Pool are required to check-in with the lifeguard on duty and swipe their SIUE card for access.

Learn More About Give 30 Mentoring Program

The Madison County Regional Office of Education and the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB) invite you and your students to a meeting about the Madison County Give 30 Mentoring Program.

SIUE Information and Training Meeting:

Stay for the first 30 minutes of the meeting to learn about Give 30. Stay for the rest of the meeting, if you are ready to register as a potential mentor and save time by completing mandatory training and fingerprinting right away.

SIUE students selected as Give 30 mentors will commit to spending 30 minutes per week visiting a local teenager who has been through a disciplinary process or is otherwise struggling. 

Instructor Taylor Donohoo will present the same information on each date.

The SEHHB will provide cookies and drinks.

"Introduction to Algebraic Probability via Markov Chains?"

Much of modern mathematics involves the use of algebraic methods to shed light in areas of classical analysis, and probability theory is no exception.

Markov's chain theory provides an intuitive pathway into the techniques of algebraic probability. This talk will provide an introduction to algebraic probability and present a conjecture concerning an unsolved problem in temporally non-homogeneous Markov chains.

Nominate an Accessibility Champion

The Office for Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) invites you to nominate a member of the SIUE community who you feel goes above and beyond to promote and defend accessibility throughout the SIUE campus community, both in and outside of the classroom, and should be recognized as a Champion of Accessibility.

The criteria for student nominees are as follows:

  • Actively engage with the ACCESS office and also participates in ACCESS-related events activities
  • Promote of accessibility, inclusion, awareness, and equity for themselves and their peers
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Vigorously dispels negative stigma and stereotypes related to students with disabilities and the ACCESS office

The criteria for faculty/staff nominees are as follows:

  • Help remove barriers for students with disabilities for full inclusion and participation in programs and services
  • Cooperate in promoting acceptance and awareness for students with disabilities in all aspects of the university and community life
  • Advocate for the civil rights of students with disabilities in order to increase their participation in the SIUE community
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Make contributions in addition to normal job requirements or when the achievements of students with disabilities are not likely to be recognized by other organizations
  • Significantly improve or enhance the quality of the higher educational experience in ways that make a substantial difference for a student with a disability

SIUE Introduces Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics

SIUE is introducing a Master of Science in nutrition and dietetics designed for students who desire a master’s, while gaining eligibility to become a registered dietitian.

Students graduating with a master’s and passing the registered dietitian exam can pursue careers in clinical dietetics, community and public health, consulting, private practice, the food and nutrition industry, food service, food management, research and education, sports and wellness nutrition, or corporate wellness.

The program has a specialization in sports nutrition.
