The most recent headlines include:

Security Enhanced at Textbook Service

As part of the effort to increase security in Textbook Service, 12 new video surveillance cameras are scheduled to be installed on the Edwardsville campus.

The cameras will be installed in aisles, around registers, and entry/exit points with Textbook Service. The coverage of the cameras will include the entries, book shelves, queueing lines for check out, receiving areas and retail activities.

The new cameras will be used by Campus Police to protect employees and guests and reduce the risk of criminal activity. The cameras are meant to enhance the overall safety and security on campus. In accordance with Section II (F) of the University’s Video Surveillance Policy, Vice Chancellor for Administration Rich Walker has approved the installation of the additional security equipment.

Segue Focuses on Green Roof Research at SIUE

Over the last several years, three members of SIUE’s diverse faculty have been working together to conduct cutting-edge research on developing and maintaining green infrastructure.

On this week’s episode of Segue, CAS Dean Greg Budzban interviews Bill Retzlaff, PhD, Susan Morgan, PhD, and Serdar Celik, PhD. The trio have been working together conducting research on green roof systems.

A distinguished research professor of biological sciences and CAS associate dean, Retzlaff had previously conducted regional and national-scale air quality monitoring and evaluated how air quality might affect forest ecosystems. His work naturally led to research on water quality, and he began collaborating with Morgan, a professor of civil engineering and associate dean of the SIUE Graduate School.

Combining Retzlaff’s expertise of plants and Morgan’s knowledge of environmental engineering and storm water, the two extensively researched green roofs, which are systems that extend the lives of existing roofs through a lightweight growing medium and plants on top of fiber cloths, water-proofing, root repellant systems and drainage systems. The duo ultimately created the Green Roof Environmental Evaluation Network (G.R.E.E.N.) in 2004.

Celik, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, joined SIUE in 2007. One year later, he joined Retzlaff and Morgan at G.R.E.E.N. to use his knowledge of thermal and fluid sciences, and energy to focus on the energy-saving aspects of green roofs.

This episode of Segue will air at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 19, on WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound and siue.edu/wsie.

Dr. Andy Theising's New Publication Speaks to Ireland Audience

Andrew Theising, PhD, professor in the Department of Political Science and coordinator of the Initiative for Urban Research in the College of Arts and Sciences, had an unusual "publication" this month.

Theising was asked to write a brief essay on St. Louis for the Gate Theater in Dublin, Ireland, which is staging Tennessee Williams' "Glass Menagerie" this month.

The essay is a semi-biographical play set in St. Louis in the 1930s. Theising was asked to write the essay to explain the city to Dubliners, who don't know anything about it.

"It's fun to think that our region is being appreciated in other parts of the world," said Theising.

You can also send Melody a congratulatory email at mscrogg@siue.edu.

“Melody always goes above and beyond in her job," said Gretchen Fricke, director of Student Services in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. "She never interrupts us when we are with students or on the phone, but she still always gets her job done.  She is such a hard worker, but she always has a smile on her face and is very pleasant.  She takes care of us, so we can focus on students.”

“Melody is not only a dedicated and conscientious worker, but takes pride in her work and does so with a smile,"said Mark Janes, building service supervisor. "As she is temporarily displaced with the construction in Founders Hall, Melody is spreading her dedication around the core buildings. I can truly say it is a privilege to be her supervisor.”
