Cultural Competence for a Pharmacist, April 25

The Departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy Practice will present:

Wanqing Liu, PhD, associate professor, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University in Detroit
"Cultural Competence for a Pharmacist: What does Genetics Tell Us?"
12-1:30 p.m.
Thursday, April 25
University Park, room 1127

In healthcare practice, cultural diversity has an impact on the interaction between caregivers and patients, which eventually influences healthcare outcomes. Therefore, cultural competence is not only a knowledge base, but also an important skill to be developed for healthcare professionals, which is pivotal for providing individualized care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors.

While this training should be integrated into many courses of the PharmD curriculum, the pharmacogenomics education has a unique role in this process. We integrated cultural competence education in our pharmacogenomics course with three steps: awareness, understanding and integration.

We make students aware that patients heterogeneity in response to drug treatment is common, which could be attributed to many factors including culture diversity and genetic factors. We further emphasize the importance of understanding the biological and genetic basis of many culture diversity underlying the inter-patient variability in response to medication.

Such an understanding should be further integrated into the students’ professional practice to develop the skills for the evidence-based, patient-centric healthcare.
