Associate Provost Open Forum, Today

Four candidates were selected to visit campus for the position of Associate Provost for Academic Planning, Assessment and Accreditation. 

The open forum for the fourth candidate, Allison Reeves, PhD, associate professor in the SIUE Department of Educational Leadership will be held:

Food and Nutrition Club Presents Galligan, Today

SIUE Hosts Novelist Vu Tran and Poet TJ Jarrett at Literary Event

SIUE’s new Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing program will host award-winning novelist Vu Tran and poet TJ Jarrett today and Saturday, April 6. Both authors will read in The Cougar Store at the Morris University Center (MUC) followed by lively question-and-answer sessions.

At 4 p.m. today, Vu Tran will read. He authored the novel, Dragonfish, a New York TimesNotable Book and one of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Best Books of the Year. He is the winner of a Whiting Award, and his short stories have appeared in many publications. He teaches creative writing at the University of Chicago.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the MUC’s Mississippi/Illinois Room, SIUE creative writing faculty members will participate in a flash reading. Professors Tiana Clark, Joshua Kryah, Geoff Schmidt and Valerie Vogrin will each read briefly from their work.

At 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jarrett will read. Her debut collection Ain’t No Grave was published by New Issues Press. Her second collection Zion, winner of the Crab Orchard Open Competition 2013, was published by Southern Illinois University Press. Her recent work has been published in Poetry, African American Review, Boston Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Callaloo, VQR and others. She lives in Nashville, Tenn.

Orchid Ensemble, highly acclaimed and unique musicians who blend a variety of musical styles to produce an intriguing and delightful sound experience for audiences worldwide, will perform:

Orchid Ensemble was nominated to receive the annual Canadian musical award JUNO.

The trio consists of Lan Tung (Taiwan/Canada) on the erhu/Chinese violin, Dailin Hsieh (Taiwan) on the zheng/Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard (Canada) on percussion. The group blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound.

Segue Features John Q. Walker and "Solving Alzheimer’s" for Arts & Issues

SIUE is honored to welcome John Q. Walker, PhD, software entrepreneur, inventor and SIUE alumnus, back to campus for the inaugural Ann and Earl Lazerson Lecture.

On this week’s episode of Segue, SIUE’s premier radio show that discusses the lives and work of the people on campus and beyond, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Greg Budzban interviews the alumnus about his upcoming lecture, presented by Arts & Issues, and the Ann and Earl Lazerson Endowment. Walker’s “Solving Alzheimer’s” lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Morris University Center’s Meridian Ballroom.

This Segue episode will air at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 7, on WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound and siue.edu/wsie.

School of Dental Medicine Hosts 2019 Research Day, April 9

The School of Dental Medicine invites the SIUE campus community to attend the 2019 SDM Research Day on Tuesday, April 9 on the Alton Campus. The day's events will feature a keynote address, a student table clinic competition and a vendor fair.

This year's keynote speaker is University of Washington’s (UW) Susan W. Herring, PhD. Herring is a professor of orthodontics and oral health sciences at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

An opportunity to review outstanding student research will be available in Roller Hall, Building 263, immediately following the lecture presentation.

All guests are welcome.

The Department of Theater and Dance (DOTD) presents “Voices from the Front – Daughter, Son, and the War Within” by award-winning playwright Cassandra Medley.

SIUE University Staff Senate Elections Open through April 10

Electronic ballots have been sent to eligible employees for the Staff Senate election that opened Wednesday, April 3. Voters will have until 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 to cast their ballots.

Elections are being run for the following positions:

  • Civil service: Negotiated and Prevailing classification (4 seats, 6 candidates)
  • Civil service: Open Range/Confidential, Managerial and Supervisory Exclusions classification (2 seats, 3 candidates)
  • East St. Louis Campus: civil service: Negotiated and Prevailing classification or administrative staff: Represented Classification
